Some of our staff here at the Mars & Venus Counseling Center are experts in the treatment of depression. These experienced counselors, through the techniques and philosophies of leaders in the field of counseling, will provide compassionate, comprehensive treatment of depression for adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling is provided on an individual basis for adults. Family involvement is necessary for the treatment of children and adolescents. Some of the typical symptoms of depression are low energy, low self-esteem, insomnia, over-eating or poor appetite, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, and feelings of hopelessness. I provide clients with a safe place to explore the root causes of their depression. Within the therapeutic relationship, we will also examine how the individual's thoughts, actions and feelings are connected to and feeding into their depression. We will work on breaking these negative cycles and start positive more adaptive ways of thinking, and acting to improve their mood.

Depression often occurs when when we are only able to imagine a future governed by our past. The depression is held in place by memories, and beliefs acquired in the past that have been misfiled in projections of our future. Therapy, properly conducted, helps us place the past where it belongs leaving plenty of empty space and freedom in which to imagine invigorating possibilities for the future. Medication may or may not be needed to get the process started. When one gains the ability to imagine engagement in that which beckoned but seemed impossible, depression dissipates.

We all feel sad or “down” occasionally, however, if someone feels sad all or most of the time, has a loss of interest in their favorite activities of life, feels worthless or guilty for no reason, feels life is empty and meaningless, he or she may be in the midst of a serious depression. A good rule of thumb is that, if someone feels this way every day for two weeks, it’s time to call a therapist. Together we can properly evaluate if you or your loved one is suffering from major depression or Low-Grade Depression (Dysthymia), whether the depression may be recurrent or may be part of a Bipolar Disorder, and how it can be helped by therapy and/or medication
