My approach to counselling is attachment based and trauma informed. I have extensive training in emotionally focused therapy, the gold standard in couple's therapy, which I apply in my work with couples, families, and individuals. Addiction often isolates us and keeps us from forming meaningful and intimate relationships with those most important to us. During our sessions I will be engaged and focused on helping you to make the positive changes you are looking to make and helping you to build stronger and more authentic relationships.

Counselling for addiction at Neurodiversity Aware Therapy explores how substance use or other coping strategies can become linked with motivation, anxiety, or low mood, particularly for neurodivergent people. Our approach focuses on understanding patterns of thinking and behaviour, the purposes substances may serve, and their impact on daily life. Therapy supports clients in increasing insight, strengthening motivation, and developing practical strategies that reduce harm and support goals aligned with their values.

My approach to addiction counselling focuses on understanding the root causes of addiction and helping clients develop healthier coping strategies. While I have had little training for addiction, I can offer counselling for the anxiety, depression, family relationship challenges, and boundary-setting related to the addiction. Although clients often find it difficult to let go of the addiction, they slowly feel ready as they begin to take steps and have more positive life experiences, which are also explored during therapy. Client strengths, motivations, hopes, and values are also considered and through these approaches clients begin to feel safe, satisfied, and happy living their life without the addiction.

Along with a more conventional form of therapy for addictions, I will also focus on the cause of addictive behavior and will utilize less conventional methods of ferreting out the conditions, criteria, and even purpose (how does addictive behavior benefit you?) behind the behavior. Addictions are a complicated issue, and the more the client understands the deeply rooted causes of their behavior the better chance he or she may have in controlling the condition. It isn't just about stopping the behavior but discovering the meaning behind the choices being made.

Let's face it, we all have some kind of addiction. Whether it is illegal or legal substances (like sugar or coffee), we all face this challenge to a greater or lesser degree. Guilt & shame will drive us further from ourselves & others. Armed with responsibility & a well stocked emotional toolbox, self management can be obtained and maintained. This is all very doable, with support and commitment to change.
