Here at JP&A we offer counselling approaches for children, drawing upon art and play therapy modalities to assist children with the challenges they may be facing. We also work with parents to coach steps and strategies you can use at home to assist your child with recovery, coping and enhancing their level of functioning (e.g. social, spiritual, intellectual, emotional etc.)

As an adult therapist, I help parents cope w family issues. Patterns of disfunction are often unconsciously repeated. If a family connects with me directly due to my past work experience, or if a therapist refers a family to me knowing my history in the field, I do provide limited space for families. I offer Emotionally Focused Family Therapy which has important engagement with parents/caregivers/guardians. Quite simply, I need you just as much as the child does for effective treatment! I have years of experience working with young children (5-12) and their parents. I use a variety of techniques (play therapy, art therapy) to help children process their emotions and learn to express themselves in a healthy manner. I also help children understand (in a developmentally appropriate manner) how to make sense of their anxiety and any possible trauma or event that may have been associated with it. I also work very closely with parents of children as I believe that parents can be the most effective therapeutic ally as they have the greatest source of influence on their young children. I provide parents with tools to understand and effectively communicate with their children.

I work with young children identified as having learning difficulties, (ADD), (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, or antisocial personality disorder. Each child is unique, and presents different needs. My initial focus is on finding the underlying issues contributing to their difficulties. Once these have been identified, I create a plan for resolving the issues of concern. Success is achieved when a child, with appropriate training, is able to adopt strategies for functioning more independently, maintaining more sustained focus and regulating their emotions. As counter-productive patterns are replaced over time, a child will develop new norms in behaviour and outlook.

Children can experience various challenges that can impact their mental health. Therapy can offer children a safe space and a listening ear while providing different tools and skills to support them in creating change and alleviating distressing emotions and feelings. When working with young children, I seek to get to know them and create a caring, safe and interactive environment where they can explore and learn about their feelings, work through difficulties, better understand themselves and others and learn new ways of engaging with themselves and the world.
