My interest in Family Therapy grew out of my work with patients in acute care hospitals. As I interacted with the patients and their families, I realized that if one family member is in pain, all the family members are somehow affected. This insight caused me to shift my focus away from the more traditional psychodynamic theories I was earlier taught in University and to focus instead on how family therapy and family systems brought healing. This growing body of literature, which started in the 1960s, has revolutionized my thinking, enabling me to find a more generous, holistic, and integrated approach to patient care and family healing. My approach is systemic, meaning I will look at the ways the family is functioning as a whole to gather potential insights and ideas for gently helping the family imagine a different way of being together. I believe family environments are fundamental learning grounds for building attachment and love. I have extensive experience helping families of all cultures, ages, and configurations to learn to talk so the others will listen and learn to listen so the others will talk. Breaking down barriers within a family is so important. It is vital to feel accepted and connected. The two important elements that people need to feel on top of the world are, being connected to others and being in control of their life. Gestalt therapy is a systems‐oriented, immediate‐experience‐oriented, and affect‐oriented therapy that is highly effective for families.
