Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.

I am a highly skilled and seasoned addiction/alcoholism Counselor. I have worked with addicts and alcoholics in all stratus of society. My healing approach includes a three part wraparound program of wellness that strongly promotes a consistent, robust, and satisfying Recovery. I utilize a Solution Focused / Rapid Resolution Therapy approach with detailed aftercare and support systems in place.

Addiction involves compulsive behavior that can gradually lead you to feel out of control with your life. Addiction comes in many forms and can include addiction to substances, people (love addiction), food, or work. Process addictions, such as pornography or sexual addiction, can destroy a marriage and family. The shame to the individual and the family can be worse than chemical addictions. But process addictions can be more difficult to understand. I can help you find healing from your spouse's addiction and learn how to set healthy boundaries and improve self-care. Addictions steal people’s lives and break apart families. An addiction can be described as any compulsive and habitual behavior that limits your freedom. This includes alcoholism, substance abuse and dependency, drug abuse, compulsive gambling, pornography and sexual addiction, and others. Addictions have several warning signs, such as increased secrecy, withdrawing from family/friends, fatigue, failure to meet responsibilities, declining health, defensiveness, mood shifts, and demanding more privacy. The addictive cycle is hard to stop, but it can but it can be broken. As professional counselors we can help you break the chains of addiction!

I think of addiction generally as a habit out of control. You can learn to change your habits and thus control your behavior. Of course some addictions are so out of control they require detox and residential treatment. That is not the kind of addictions I deal with. You can be addicted to anything: pornography, alcohol, drugs, sex, or even chocolate.

I do not provide Addictions Counseling in my practice, but I do often see clients who have substance abuse issues. Anyone with a history of substance abuse themselves, or among family & friends, knows all too well the devastating & pervasive negative impacts that addiction can have on one's entire universe. The impacted areas typically/can often include failing interpersonal relationships, economic hardships, loss of work, health concerns, criminal behavior, depression, & suicidality, to name a few. I focus on all of these areas, & more, when treating individuals suffering from addiction-related issues. I also treat addictive problem behaviors that MAY not include ANY substance use.

Addictions thrive on wounding. Anger, pain, emptiness and related self-esteem issues create vacant spaces that need "filling up" with that certain "med of choice." It can be any number of "self-completers" - alcohol, drugs, sex or even work. Through "med" use, we feel momentarily and artificially safe or "salved" (like Vaseline on a new burn). Whatever the vehicle, those dependent on a thing, substance or person pursue that fleeting "fix" because they have not yet learned how to self-regulate - i.e., how to take care of themselves/love themselves and gain a stable footing from the inside out. This will be central to our work together. I am honored to journey to that special place with you!

Addiction is something that touches every person in some way, whether it is you, a family member, or a friend. We view addiction in our society as some sort of mental weakness. Addiction is disease just like diabetes or heart disease and that is how I treat it. A lot of the time with addiction, comes some sort of other baggage.
