Ever wonder why you can't get control of you anger? Maybe you've tried lots of different techniques or read a number of books and nothing seems to work for you. Too many of us with anger problems are too focused on the anger, to the exclusion of some of the emotions that trigger that anger. I work with clients to understand the full spectrum of their emotions and how anger is a part of that spectrum.

Anger is a powerful emotion. Sometimes it is secondary to other emotions that are more uncomfortable to acknowledge than the anger. Anger can lead one to do things later regretted. Anger can also come with many "tabu's" attached; which further impede the healthy expression of anger. There are times when anger can be harnessed as the fuel to drive positive change. In counseling you can learn to stop the unhealthy and destructive expression of anger. You can lean to unchain yourself from the "Tabu" messages attached to anger. You can learn to harness the power in anger for healthy and constructive uses to fuel positive changes.

At Home or Private Discreet Intensives

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Anger is one of the most destructive emotions we experience. Not only can it put people we love in jeopardy, but it puts your own health at serious risk. An important parts controlling your anger is recognizing the physical changes in your body before you act out. For example, Is your heart racing? Do you feel a rush of warmth to your head? Also, when you can identify the triggers (the tone of voice, the subject matter, the environment, etc.) you can learn better impulse control. We will practice mindfulness techniques in session to raise your awareness of your mind, body, and spirit when you are feeling anger, and help you practice more effective, safe ways of reacting to these triggers.

In anger management, my primary focus is on instructing the client in breaking the often long-standing patterns of poor communication skills. They will benefit by learning appropriate assertiveness skills, rather than remaining in aggressive or passive types of communication responses. I define assertiveness as communicating in an honest, but respectful way. Clients will also benefit from learning anger principles such as "triggers", which are the people or situations that trigger their inappropriate anger reactions. I use role playing and "homework" assignments for them to practice improved communication. A helpful tool that I teach is simple, but effective -- "Stop and Think".

Although I do not offer official classes for anger management, I do address anger as a block and/or limitation to optimal mental health. I approach anger as a source of pain that is trapped in the body. I approach anger as an emotion that must be released. During the release, techniques for managing that anger are required.

As a culture, we do not do well with healthy expressions of anger. Often we are raised to suppress it and then we have limited practice at dealing with big emotion. There is a spectrum of healthy aggression- to keep us safe and to maintain boundaries- and rage- our body's strategy for safety. Anger management is about applying the right "dosing" to maintain boundaries yet not fracture relationships or suffer other losses. I am able to help you learn to regulate your body to be able to apply the appropriate "dose" to be effective and not destructive.

Some of the latest studies suggest that the root issue for those experiencing anger issues stem from a sense of self shame. I received training as an Anger Management Specialist I and am trained to work with individuals either through a 12 session course or a combination of coursework and individual therapy. I've found the latter to be very effective in helping people understand their anger response and develop other resources and outlets to manage that powerful emotion
