I am not a good choice for a first line of response to recovery but I'm a good addition to your ongoing recovery work. I consider myself an expert in addiction therapy. My focus is not the addictive substance or activity. I focus on the root cause for why you engage in the various activities for the purpose of self-medication. As we flesh out the emotional and traumatic scars from past life events, you will find that your desire to self-medicate reduces significantly.

I do counsel clients that struggle addiction but ask that clients with serious levels of addiction be willing to attend 12-step group while in therapy. I may in fact end therapy with clients who are not wiling to simultaneously seek help from behavioral programs. My reason for this is that therapy will kick up deeper levels of disruption with clients that will further elevate addiction if they are not involved in other forms of recovery. I do believe that relational therapy can heal deeper levels of addiction once stability is achieved in behavior.

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.

My approach to addiction is one of compassion, harm-reduction techniques, and building awareness. I am particularly specialized in assessing for & treating video game addiction. Video game addiction (similar to other addiction behavior) tends to be less about the video games themselves and more about the individual’s internal/external supports and self-regulation. We will explore and thoughtfully assess what the player is getting from their play time, consequences of excessive play, how the player feels during and outside of gaming sessions, and the types of games that are being played. This work is best facilitated by a therapist who understands games and gaming culture.
