Joanne Nyland is a registered psychotherapist (#4483) who has been working with with adult and adolescent individuals as well as couples for over 20 years. She adapts her therapeutic approach to meet the needs of the clients with whom she works. She draws on the client's strengths and works collaboratively to meet the goals that the clients would like to achieve. The importance of developing a strong rapport through carrying genuine compassion and empathy helps the counselling experience and increases success in healing.
Joanne works frequently with trauma survivors and the effects of childhood abuse.  Her skills include working with issues such as depression, self-esteem, trauma, relationship problems and general well-being. She has a special interest in working with obsessive-compulsive disorder and general anxiety. Relationship issues, communication and conflict resolution are generally improved through the counselling that Joanne provides. She offers supportive, strength-based counselling to make life's challenges more bearable. Her practice is designed to reach people in the Clarence-Rockland area with daytime appointments either in person or by secure video.  At this time, Joanne is not accepting evening appointments.
Joanne has a Master's Degree in Individual Counselling and has continued her studies through Gottmann model and EFT model for working with couples.   Joanne is also trained in both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as well as brainspotting, a brain-based treatment which uses specific eye position to heal trauma.  She was involved with marriage preparation workshops for years and presented on issues such as Effective Communication, Conflict Resolution and Sex and Intimacy. She also facilitated small group discussions in these workshops. She offers presentations as requested by the general public, such as Depression in Teens. She participates in ongoing training to upgrade counselling skills and is certified with Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.   Joanne also provides supervision for interns and other psychotherapists.

Having worked in the Ottawa area for years, Joanne is expanding to meet the needs of the Clarence-Rockland area which has been under-serviced for its counselling needs.
