Family therapy is often the treatment of choice for families who are confronted with specific crisis situations, (such as death, divorce, illness, or child/adolescent issues). When the family is the client, I assess the way members interact and work to improve communication and problem-solving skills, as well as resolve the current life stressors. Each family member plays a role in the way the family interacts and is seen as a vital participant in both the healthy and dysfunctional styles of interaction. Therefore, in family counseling the goal is to assist each member to work together more effectively to create a more functional family unit.

Family relationships can be the most beautiful and the most frustration relationships in our lives. My approach to family therapy includes the whole family as a system. We will identify roles in the family, creatively problem solve family issues and build positive communication skills between family members to facilitate honesty, compassion love and togetherness.

I am a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and am completing a Ph.D. in Marital and Family Therapy. I use a family systems approach when working with families. I work with families in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It is suggested that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as a part of their family, as the family is an emotional unit. By working with families we can see patterns that are sometimes dysfunctional. Families who are able to see their dysfunction are able to make the changes that bring about healthy relationships within their unit.

Family therapy looks at the entire family system—parents, children, extended family members—to identify strengths and problematic behaviours. I collaborate with families on strategies for utilizing their own capabilities for resolving problems, and on developing effective communication and problem-solving skills for preventing conflicts. Family therapy techniques teach and coach members of a family unit to address family conflicts by improving the communication and interaction of family members. There are numerous family therapy techniques, but four main models dominate the spectrum. The main therapy family techniques: structural, Bowenian, strategic and systematic. All provide an environment to increase communication and an empathic understanding of the emotions of family members. Our initial assessments determines the technique that the therapist feels best to increase positive interactions within the family unit. During sessions we provide an environment that is safe and non-judgmental, allowing free expressions.

The family system is one that can serve as a strong foundation of support or one that breeds unhealthy current and future behaviors.
