While most treatment approaches to addiction include 12 step programs, rehabs, and now sober living houses, Grey Matters International, Inc. provides a wildly successful alternative to traditional models of addiction treatment----that keeps the brain in mind. That is, talking to the conscious brain while the primal brain is deciding things even before you are consciously aware? Well, that is the problem to solve in addiction. We have the solution utilizing a new cutting edge neuroscience-centered brain rebalancing system. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or call 877-606-6161.

I liken addiction to a fever. A fever is the body's way of telling you that your system is sick. People who are not in pain, who are not hurting tend to be addiction free. So, I work with my clients to get at that pain, that system upset and help them uncover the metaphorical virus that hurt them in the first place. While doing this deeper work I also help my clients create new and healthier thoughts and behaviors in order to undo the damaging behaviors that often surround addiction.

In working with Addiction, I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR. EMDR is traditionally seen as a technique specifically used in working with trauma. This is true and most of the time, addiction is rooted in trauma so it can be helpful as a dual diagnosis approach. However, EMDR can also be used specifically to help with addictions because it can be used to desensitize triggers for using and help clients maintain sobriety.

Addictions are always a statement of personal entitlement, "I can do this and I do not care how it affects you." When acting through your addiction you give the people around you the message that you are important and they are not. I deal with people who live with addictions with firm, clear, loving confrontations. I can help you deal with your grandiosity even if you do not recognize it when you first come in. I can help you find your humility and accept responsibilty for the pain and harm you have caused in relationships. When you deal with it straight on you can have access to the deepest layers of your self-esteem and to your core value. You will move from pretense into authentic life.

Addiction is very subtle when it enters a person’s life. No one ever thinks, “How can I spend all of my money, lose my job, distance myself from friends and family, and put something in my body that will at least damage me if not kill me?” I have worked with addiction for years now. There isn’t a type of person addiction has not affected. Doesn’t matter your gender, job, race, religion, political views, faith in God, social status, age, financial situation, etc. Addiction is the great equalizer for all people. Many people won’t or can’t take advantage of these services offered for a number of reasons. Help is available. Time to take your life back from addiction.

I work with clients with sexual addictions, such as compulsive pornographic internet consumption. Research on the impact of such addictions is used to determine if or how this information fits with client experiences. This information is combined with the client's unique experiences to determine the level of honest commitment to change. If change is sought, we then work to identify triggers and devise coping strategies to intercept the chain of events leading to relapse. When relapse is an issue, we address it deliberately but delicately, understanding the toxic and unhelpful nature of shame and it's impact on addictive cycles.

Addictions are about worship. Recovering addicts are the most enjoyable people to be around. Why? They worship. Maybe not in the traditional sense but they are grateful, humble, relaxed. They know their place and they are not full of themselves. Prior to recovery addicts were taught or taught themselves that certain feelings were impossibly dangerous to feel. They found a substance/activity that transported (worship) them to a place where they did not have to feel. They did not have to suffer. Addictions is a refusal to suffer and the discovery of an idol to worship. The story must be explored: Who taught you it was so dangerous to feel? Who taught you that you can not suffer?

Addictions often result from repetitive choices we make in order to feel more connected: emotionally connected, physically connected, and/or spiritually connected. Some addictions decrease physical pain while others may numb emotional overwhelm. Together, we can explore ways to bring compassion and understanding to your addictions. This is a first step. What we resist can persist. So, it is important to move towards feeling and understanding the underlying reasons for addiction: trauma, loss, rejection, overwhelm....All of these painful experiences can drive unhealthy patterns. Building support systems and bringing structured approaches to addiction may also be needed.
