My approach toward addiction is to discover, with the client, what it has been accomplishing for him or her. In other words, what the purpose of the addiction is, its specific cause. The factor or factors that have been keeping it in place. I also tend to use cognitive-semantic processing and skills training because, very often, a person's unexamined thoughts and beliefs about self, life, and addiction may be an obstacle to his or her recovery. Examining these from a new and fresh perspective can bring about renewed insight, opportunity, and motivation.

I started my work in this field primarily focusing on addictive disorders. In the last 30 years the magnitude of addictive behaviors have exploded. What used to be primarily drug and alcohol addiction now covers many different types of addictive behaviors including sex, spending, shopping, food, gambling and the internet, just to name a few of the more common ones. My approach when working with people who are struggling with addiction is first help them maintain a level of sobriety or abstinence from their addictive behaviors. We create an individualized treatment plan with an emphasis on relapse prevention that often includes support groups and family or couples therapy.

Addiction is a difficult problem to overcome. Quitting the substance or addiction is only part of the battle. Addiction is mental as well as sometimes physical. Often the mental part of addiction is worse than the physical aspect of it. We look at what the underlying causes at the root of the addiction. Most of the time, addiction is the result of a previous trauma that has occurred in a person's life and the addiction is a symptom. When new pathways are created in the brain, called neuroplasticity, the chain of addiction is broken. It is difficult to create the new pathways but it is possible. Start today!

I've had a 40 year career at the Department of Veteran's Affairs working in Mental Health units. Many of those patients had a primary problem with Substance Abuse. I have completed substance abuse assessments, facilitated outpatient and inpatient therapy groups for substance abusers, and extensively worked with their families. I have a deep understanding of the issues surrounding substance abuse and am aware of the community resources required to fully treat substance abuse. Addictions can also include gambling, food, work, and sex. Often we get one under control and another one emerges. I am here to help.

Recovery from addiction is a life-changing experience that is usually a struggle with stages or phases of change. Recovery is helped by a supportive and healing environment that will provide safety and encouragement. Recovery from addiction begins with an admission that we need help, and then reaches a point where the same person now in recovery is helping others to accomplish success on that same path. There is great reward to being in recovery.

I have eleven years experience facilitating groups using The Genesis Process for the Prevention of Relapse of Addictive and Compulsive Behaviors, developed by Michael Dye. This is a biblically-based approach using cognitive behavior therapy and motivational interviewing. I do not provide services to people who are actively using drugs or alcohol, and encourage them to seek therapy with a specialized treatment center. I offer support services to help maintain sobriety and to family members and friends who want to actively support someone with an addiction. The Genesis Process is effective for people who have other types of unhealthy habits they want to change.
