Mental Health in Saratoga
Santa Clara County residents recognize that mental illness is a serious problem for many communities in the county. Reducing stigma and discrimination as a result of mental illness ranks as the highest mental health priority in the county. An additional concern is the county-wide disparity in access to mental health for minorities, children, and youth.2
Saratoga residents who are struggling with an addiction, grief, unemployment, family issues, or a number of other difficulties can find peer support and spiritual guidance at one of the support groups offered by Saratoga Federated Church. For those struggling with addiction, AA meetings are held at the church. Church staff also provides information and referral services for caregivers who tend to the needs of an elderly family member. Many other programs are also available. For more information, call 408-867-1000.3
Current Initiatives
As part of the Mental Health Services Act, the Santa Clara County government implemented the Transitional Age Youth Peer Mentor Program in order to give young people the tools they need to move from adolescence into adulthood. Participants in the county's mental health system are paired with a peer mentor who assists them with building independence, increasing self-awareness, and developing strategies for maintaining good mental health. Participants learn about health care, education, and housing options available to them as well. For additional information about the initiative, call 408-885-3219.4
