The area where the modern city of Saratoga is located was originally inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. European settlement didn't occur until 1847, when William Campbell built a sawmill just south of the city's current downtown area. Throughout the rest of the 1800s, the area's economy was industrial in nature, with grist, paper, and furniture being the primary products produced. In the early 1900s, however, the economy became agricultural, with many wineries and orchards. The area's economy remains agriculturally based to this day.1
