The area where the modern city of Saratoga is located was originally inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. European settlement didn't occur until 1847, when William Campbell built a sawmill just south of the city's current downtown area. Throughout the rest of the 1800s, the area's economy was industrial in nature, with grist, paper, and furniture being the primary products produced. In the early 1900s, however, the economy became agricultural, with many wineries and orchards. The area's economy remains agriculturally based to this day.1

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Saratoga

Suicide impacts many families in Saratoga, regardless of their socioeconomic status, ethnic background, or educational level. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, and is very common among young people in the Bay Area.2 The death of a loved one can lead to immense guilt, contracted episodes of depression, stress, anxiety, and reduced family functioning. As a result, prevention and intervention programs are needed to help end the trend of Saratoga residents taking their own lives.

CASA is a community-based non-profit agency that provides mental health-related resources and educational programs for Saratoga area families. The S.T.E.P. Parenting Class focuses on helping parents develop a skillset that helps their young child transition into adolescence. CASA also oversees an annual Red Ribbon Week, which promotes education and awareness about drug abuse. CASA's under-21 club is a place where the city's youth can engage in support programs and mentorship opportunities. Additional information about these programs is available by calling 408-230-8496.3
