Depression can sometimes be multi-layered with a different kind of depression in each layer. It can be habitual, familial, memory specific, biological, seasonal, vicarious, inter-generational, reactional, or one of several other types. Few people like depression. Yet there is hope. Your body may be showing you something - depression can provide clues to a better life. There is information in or under that depression that can help you. Using focusing-oriented therapy, we can track where depression leads; we can discover its roots and shift your experience. Often, finding something new and helpful, we change not only your depression but also move your life forward.

Depression can have many causes, including biological and psychological. Counselling will assist you to think more positively, raise your energy level and become productive again, being the best you can be. It may be necessary to include significant others in the counseling so they can be supportive of treatment or sometimes their actions contribute to a partner being depressed and they need help to see that they are part of the problem.
Lisa Webster, MA CCC
Let go of the painful emotions that cause depression. Using rapid release techniques, this process does not have to take long. Life can be difficult and overwhelming. We try to cope by pushing away our feelings and forging ahead. This can work temporarily, but when we don't allow ourselves to release our emotion, it can build up. We may find ourselves overwhelmed and notice our happiness disappearing. I believe that underneath all of our suppressed emotions our sense of well-being is still in tact. Letting go of the build up of emotion can ease the burden and allow the inner happiness to resurface. Your happiness is waiting...
Kim White, M.A.,RCC, CPCC

Depression is one of the most common mental health concerns today. Depression can take away your interest in life, make it difficult to get out of bed and can cause a cloud over your life. It is a difficult step to make the call to come for counselling, but the benefits can be great. With cognitive behavioral therapy, you can learn to control the thoughts that are contributing to your depression and give you the power over your depression. At West Coast Counselling, we take the time to understand you and your concerns and work with you to achieve your goals. Don't let depression take control of you.
Elaine Clark, BA. M.P.C.P.CCht
Depression is the result of following a thought system based on fear. Once I have a fear thought I can increase it over and over again until everything else is eliminated and it becomes very difficult to think of anything else. Working with the mental discipline of meditation and the idea that thoughts are our choice can make an immediate difference.

Is getting out of bed becoming to be the hardest accomplishment of your day? Do you feel irritated and or unsociable? Are you unproductive in your relationships or at work? How about eating...are you eating to much or too little? Do you just not care anymore? What if I told you that you just didn't have to feel this way? What if I told you that your life could be turned around quickly, and painlessly. Lets work on it together, piece by piece - you don't have to do this alone. Depression is often caused by thoughts you have that you have learned to listen to, and have come overtime to believe. Lets take a look at those thoughts together, and see if we can't gain a new prospective!
Judy Lyon, MA, SFTT, MPCP #1883
There are different types of depression resulting from various causes, for example, chemical imbalance, unresolved grief or unexpressed feelings.Yet, for the individual experiencing depression there are often similarities in terms of some of their symptoms. Depression can cause us to experience low energy, restless sleep or over sleeping, lack of motivation, loss of interest to name a few. Symptoms may range from mildly annoying to completely debilitating. Together we will explore your symptoms and possible causes from a perspective of curiousity and compassion, followed by creating and implementing an individualized treatment plan that will empower you to regain balance in your daily life.

Depression is a multi-faceted mental illness so it requires a flexible and complete approach to treatment.
I use a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Hakomi Body Centered Therapy and new advances in understanding and changing brain chemistry to help clients deal with depression in their lives. I encourage a Holistic approach where all aspects of the clients life is looked at and modified if necessary.
Shawn McNabb, B.A., M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C.
When working around depression I find it is important to establish whether this is long term or situational depression. I look at the strengths one has already and how they can build on their own internal coping strategies. If medication is required (through a Dr.'s supervision) counselling strategies can also be very helpful. I also look at assessing the history of the individual. For example are they used to feeling depressed. Its important to 'meet' someone where they are at because it might feel stranger at first to not feel depressed (happy).
Rosemary Fromson, MPCP, RPC
Depression can be debilitating leaving many feeling like they are living in darkness. it affects your mind, body, spirit, eating and sleeping habits, relationships both personal and professional. We will work together to trace where the depression first became apparent. Together we put a plan together that has specific coping strategies for you as a unique individual.
Lorill Drummund, M.Ed., RCC, Certified in EMDR
When people are depressed there is some reason this has happened. It is not simply that their brain has caused this. Often there are specific, challenging life events that have occured, to which the person has not yet found resolution. Medication has just "numbed" their feelings so they are no longer in a pit of despair, yet they don't feel fully alive. In Canada, it is also very common for there to be an extra layer of depression caused by seasonal affective disorder. I support you and stand by you in facing the issues, and healing each layer of the depression. The therapy I do includes EMDR, self-soothing techniques, unveiling old attachment issues, and even art and stories.
Annette Kasahara, BA, MEd. (Psychology), RCC
Through the process of exploring the possible causes of their feelings of depression, it is my hope that clients will discover that they do have the capability of addressing these issues. Clients will learn that they do have choices in how they view specific situations, and that they have choices in how they respond to challenges in their lives. Clients will benefit from learning communication skills that will encourage them to more effectively express needs and feelings to significant people in their lives. Moreover, it is my hope that as clients come to greater self-awareness, they will develop a kinder and more gentle acceptance of Self.

Rarely do we need help more than when gripped by a merciless depression, and rarely does it feel so unbearably hard to reach out. But you don’t have to live this way. Whether your depression is situational or clinical, acute or chronic, I will help you uncover negative beliefs, shift them, and reveal your own strengths, support systems, and resilience. Depression is so debilitating, robbing us of hope itself. Disengaged from life, we cannot muster the energy required to carry out our daily tasks, sometimes we cannot even get out of bed. It hurts our partners and children, and distances the rest of the world. There really is hope. There really is healing.

I integrate cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness in treating depression, as this has been shown by research to be highly effective. Using CBT, clients benefit from understanding how their thought patterns relate to their depression, and from learning to challenge self-defeating thoughts. Sometimes, however, thoughts are stubborn, and mindfulness helps clients to "let thoughts be thoughts" while they commit themselves to a course of action that increases self-efficacy and brings fulfillment. In general, I assist clients in becoming more flexible and adaptable in their thinking, and in developing a strong set of coping skills to enhance their resiliency against depression.
Tammy Humeny, B.A. M.A. R.C.C.
I will work collaboratively with you to understand what is contributing to your depression. We then create a treatment plan that will address each of the contributing variables in your situations that is causing your depression. Some of the things we may work on is how your thinking is contributing to your overall feelings and mood (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). We will examine what needs of yours haven't been met, and what we can do to create a better self care plan so you feel better. Clients report that counselling provides them with direction, hope, self understanding and the ability to recreate their life stories.

Depression is approached with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Education and coping / management techniques are explored, as well as 'homework' in the form of skills practise. With children / youth often Art Therapy and / or Play therapy is integrated into the counselling. Parents of kids should expect to be involved and supported in their awareness of anexiety and stress and how to assit their children in management.
Depression as an aspect of trauma (PTSD) can also be addressed.

Depression can be a debilitating experience in life. My approach to depression is to make it an ally instead of seeing at the enemy that causes us so much pain. Depression can bring our focus to an area in our life which is not working well or force us to pay attention when all we want to do is run away. Engaging in counselling can provide a safe place to explore depression, how it impacts your life, experiment with different approaches to alleviate the symptoms of depression and find relief from it. There is not one way to deal with depression, you have to find what works for you and counselling can provide a space to explore your unique needs.
