I can work with people for whom Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has not worked, and in situations where CBT has left you feeling like a failure. There are many experiences of, and meanings of, depression. I work with you to get to know your depression, the ways it is unique in its form and its effects, what it does to you and those who love you...from here we will figure out how to respond to it together.

Depression creates deep and enduring sadness that impacts our thoughts, behaviours and body. The thoughts center on hopelessness and a view of self as unlovable or useless. Routine tasks turn into obstacles while previously enjoyable activities feel like chores. We feel lethargic and acutely aware of our aches and pains. We get trapped in vicious cycles where our mind tells us that there is no use trying, we self-isolate and then feel the pain of loneliness. In cognitive behaviour therapy, we work to lessen the hold that our negative beliefs have over us and to develop an understanding of what keeps us stuck, seemingly immobilized and numb, and yet so full of mental restlessness.

Everyone's experience of depression is unique and the reasons for depression are many. Lets explore how depression has impacted your life. To do this you have to be willing to step-in to painful feelings and experiences. In many cases it gets wose before it can get better but I will walk with you through it. Examining early life experiences, using CBT and relational-cultural models and preparing coping tools unique for you can all be helpful.
Angie Kingma, BA (Hons), BHScOT, OT Reg. (Ont.)
One of my passions in life is to help guide people through the process of recovering from depression. In many cases, the ways that people try to get themselves out of depression, paradoxically end up causing more problems. I will help you sidestep these habits that can develop (ex. 'thinking' your way out of it, being overly self-critical, isolating yourself and discontinuing activities you used to enjoy). I will help you learn how to more skillfully manage the difficult/ unpleasant emotions and thoughts that are part of the 'territory of depression'. You will learn how to be less self-critical, to tap back into positive emotions, to take much better care of yourself & feel 'alive' again.
Bernie Golden, RIHR

Depression can be a long, lonely road filled with what appear to be deep, dark holes of despair. You do not have to suffer this alone, even though it often seems that nobody in your life is able to understand or help you. I will help you understand and manage your depression in an objective, empathic, supportive and non-judgemental way. Cognitive therapy can teach you about thinking patterns that help, as well as eliminating those that hinder your growth and recovery. It is empowering to learn new coping strategies that help one manage those difficult times.

Depression comes in varried degrees. Severe depression can be extremely debilitating, and can cause one to feel utterly hopeless. Depression can manifest itself biologically, and it can also be situational. Regardless of the kind of depression one may be experiencing, there is hope. One must remember that our psychology can affect our biology. Furthermore, our relational context has a direct impact on our ability to cope. There is no quick fix to depression, but help is here.

My approach to treating depression is to help you reduce depressive symptoms to improve your sleep, concentration and general outlook on life. Understanding when symptoms began and what was going on in your life when they began is important. It is helpful to know the current stresses and the current people associated with these stresses. Understanding the disputes and disappointments which you may be going through is necessary to learn to cope with these problems more effectively. Facing conflict and reducing avoidance will help you gain an understanding of what is behind some of the symptoms that are making you uncomfortable. My goal is to help you make positive changes to cope effectively.
