Mental Health in Sherman Oaks

Many communities in Los Angeles County, including Sherman Oaks, face significant difficulties in meeting the mental health needs of all citizens who require care. Older adults, minorities, and the homeless are three populations that are particularly underserved in the Sherman Oaks area. A lack of services for these groups is due to insufficient funding or volunteers to work shelters or oversee programs, as well as discrimination and stigma associated with mental illness and chemical dependency.2 However, there are dozens of public and private agencies who seek to improve access to quality mental health care for the city's residents.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Los Angeles chapter seeks to educate the public about suicide and provide support services for those who have lost a loved one. Out of the Darkness Community and Campus Walks bring communities together to support those impacted by suicide, raise funds for programs, and address stigmas associated with mental illness. AFSP also engages lawmakers in making policy decisions. Additional information about AFSP and it's programs and services is available by calling 818-687-4055.3

Current Education

For individuals who seek to have a career in the field of social work, a master's degree in the field is a great way to get the necessary training to secure a job with a public or private agency. California State University at Los Angeles offers a M.S.W. program that prepares students to deliver services to culturally, economically, and socially diverse peoples. The program takes a strengths-based approach, which holds that all people possess strengths they can use to build a better life. The program also focuses on working with urban populations. For additional information about the program, call 323-343-3000.4
