San Diego is a family oriented community. Of the 1.1 million households in San Diego County, over 50 percent are husband-wife families. San Diego's median annual income of $63,373 is slightly higher than the average for California cities.2 Great diversity among the city's residents in terms of ethnicity, race, and cultural heritage makes it a great place to learn about others. San Diego families face many mental health related problems, however.
Methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana use in San Diego is higher than the national and California average. In 2008, there were over 13,000 substance abuse treatment admissions in San Diego, more than half of which involved racial and ethnic minorities.3 Mental health workers who wish to help San Diego residents overcome drug addiction can become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor by completing coursework at the University of California at San Diego. The program involves classes in recovery, psychopharmacology, counseling, and group leadership. There is also a 225-hour practicum component. Family Services and Assistance Programs
San Diego families with members who are poor, uninsured, or otherwise medically underserved can receive quality, affordable care at the Family Health Centers of San Diego. Family Health Centers offer support groups and educational classes for those struggling with substance abuse issues. A specialized program offering healthcare to African-American children is also available. The centers are located in neighborhoods throughout the city and county of San Diego and offer flexible hours of operation, including evenings and Saturdays.
