Anxiety can take up all our attention and feel like it has completely overwhelmed our ability to live freely and happily. I approach anxiety counselling by helping the client attend to their thoughts and feelings and then let them go -radical acceptance and letting go -not engaging in warfare with the thoughts or feelings and neither allowing them to fuse to the client. Exercises such as mindfulness help clients de-fuse from their anxious thoughts and feelings. We work at this while focusing on the values of the client, what the client wants their life to stand for.
