Work can be something fun, something to look forward to, or it can be a burden to deal with. Through work, an individual can experience a sense of work engagement (vigor, dedication, and absorption). Additionally, individuals can experience burnout, which can cause them to hate their job. Individuals spend most of their waking hours working; it is important to find meaning and satisfaction in one's work. I have spent numerous years helping individuals with their careers, not only decide on choosing a career path that is meaningful to them but also to help them find meaning and satisfaction in their existing jobs.

I see careers as extensions of who we are as people. I love helping clients evaluate their interests, skills, and abilities, and then walking through the development of realistic goals. When transitioning out from the education system, people often face a variety of foreign obstacles. Throughout our work together we will spend time focusing on personal and professional goals while also taking into consideration the emotional impact big changes puts onto a person. We will learn to find balance between pushing forward towards the good, and honoring the emotions associated with a loss of innocence/support/structure/etc.

We are given the skills and tools we need to actually complete jobs, but not the training to learn how to navigate the political and ever changing professional world. I don't do formal career counseling, but enjoy counseling entrepreneurs, business men and women, and performing artists. We would help you develop better assertiveness skills, clarify direction, improve motivation, encourage and guide you in negotiating higher salaries and rates, and cope with job/career crisis and change. I have worked with many people who lost their jobs in the current economic downturn. I also have a specialty working with performing artists to help them find satisfying jobs that allow them to pursue their art, and work with them on stage fright, creative blocks, and balancing relationship/work.

Career counseling is similar to other types of counseling. In working with my client the focus of therapy is on issues such as career exploration, career change, personal career development and other career related issues. I work with my clients to help them with feelings of inadequacy, clearing out the clutter to make the right decisions and next steps.
