I help people who are depressed and need thhelp getting to a better place. Common issues I help with: unhappy in your marriage or relationship and don't know what to do about it, depressed and having trouble eating, sleeping or getting out of bed, you're feeling very isolated and alone, feeling very sad about your relationship, divorce, feeling rejected or abandoned, low self-esteem, you're not even sure why you feel depressed, you're feeling very irritable, stressed, overwhelmed and miserable most of the time. When you are depressed, you lack energy and motivation, and want to isolate, which is one of the worst things you can do. Negative thinking drags you further into a hole, and staying alone with your thoughts can make the depression worse. I will help you evaluate your thoughts and your situation more objectively, and give you ideas about how to begin to pull yourself out of the darkness. Trying to do it alone can just prolong it. Sometimes you just need a hand to pull you up. I can do that.

Depression can feel extremely dark and debilitating. Therapy can help bring light into the darkness. Dr. Spada can hold the flashlight for you, while you lead yourself into the light. Many things in life can make us feel depressed. Understanding deeper thought patterns can hero facilitate feeling differently and living your life differently. I work with many people with depression whether as individuals, or in the context of couples therapy. I help people to become aware of their thoughts, feelings, and the experience they have in their bodies around their depression. I work cognitively and behaviorally to help them understand distorted thinking. I also work to "externalize" the feeling of depression, and help people understand that, "you are not your thoughts." Depression may be visiting you, but you are not depression. Mindfulness is a tool I use with depression to help people understand what is happening to them in the moment, and to begin to open to emotions that may be blocked.

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. We will formulate an individualized plan of action to help you address the sources of your unhappiness so that you can shed what no longer works for you and begin living a more authentic and fulfilling life.

I will determine the severity of depression and the need for medication. We will figure out if depression is an acute response to a crisis or situation. We will look at the causes, your experience of depression, what are triggers for depression, and ways to cope with it and give you better control of it. If it is a recurrent depression we will find ways for you to cope, and develop good support networks if you don't have them.

I utilize evidence-based methods that can relieve emotional pain and aid clients’ recovery from debilitating symptoms.
