Cochrane, Ontario will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Visitors and residents can participate in a list of exciting activities throughout the year. The colorful Public Library is a good place to start for community events. During the spring season, little ones can participate in songs, dancing, games and crafts at the library. Registration is required for the age group-specific events. The library also promotes literacy through the Forest of Reading program. Each age group is given a tree name.1 Every group is provided with a list of books to read and then vote on to earn the title its place as the “favorite Canadian book.” During the Easter holiday, the Cochrane public library is also home to an egg hunt event and other festive seasonal activities. Mental Health in Cochrane
Cochrane is a very small area, located in Ontario. It is a little less than 8 square kilometers, with a total population of only 3,976 and it has been losing approximately 100 residents for every five years or so. While this is a rather small community, it is also one that has many different things. There are interesting things to do, great schools, and it is growing all the time.
Mental health is a concern, however, even among this limited population. Because it is such a small and rural place, it can be hard for residents living in Cochrane to receive the mental health services that they need in order to be healthy.2 Many of them will often have to travel long distances or go to the nearest city in order to receive the help that they require. One of the largely common mental illnesses in this area is depression, and this can be a constant struggle for people who live with this every day of their lives. Current Education
Because knowledge and a solid education are so important to citizens of this area, there are wide varieties of educational institutions in the Cochrane area. These include elementary schools, high schools, institutions for teaching French and English, higher education organizations, and adult learning centers. There are also child care centers that will help teach children from a very young age while caring for your children while you attend work or school.4
