When I work with clients who are struggling with eating disorders, I focus on helping them understand the thoughts, emotions, and triggers that drive their behaviours. I use DBT to teach concrete tools such as urge management, grounding, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation, which help reduce bingeing, restricting, purging, or other harmful patterns. I also help clients identify the situations, emotions, and beliefs that lead to unhealthy eating behaviours, and together we create practical strategies to interrupt these cycles. We will look at body image, perfectionism, impulsivity, and control in a clear and straightforward way.

While I do not offer support for eating disorders, at Psychotherapy Collective, we have other therapists who are well positioned to support you. Eating disorders are not really about food. They involve complex emotional issues that have significant impact on ones physical, emotional and social health. If you are preoccupied with your weight, focused on body image, size, or shape, compelled to perform specific rituals around food, obsessive about food, or deem foods as “safe” or “unsafe” to eat you may be engaging in disordered eating.
