In family therapy, the focus is on the interactions of those that are affected by the presenting concern and strengthening relationships of the family system. It is not uncommon in families for patterns to be set and sometimes these patterns are not healthy or helpful for family relationships, or individual mental health. We often learn to tolerate our family members’ behaviour and have difficulty speaking up or expressing how their behaviour impacts us. In my sessions with families, I encourage open, honest communication and ensure that each individual feels validated and gets equal time to be heard. This means we view the family as a system and try to improve the interactions between members of the system in order to improve the overall functioning of the family. My formal degree is Marriage and Family Therapy. This systemic training focuses on the family as a dynamic and integral part of each individual. Everyone in the family influences everyone else, change impacts the system. The more people in a family involved in the therapy session the better! As a family member in therapy you can understand your impact on everyone else, reach new levels of communication with each other, and discover new ways of being that are respectful, inclusive, and connected.

My background in relational therapy allows me to understand individuals through the relationships they cohabit. Families come in various forms and sizes, and at times, navigating through these relational dynamics and understanding differing perspectives may be difficult.
