Family Therapy can take on various configurations with respect to family member participation. For example, meeting with family members as a whole, individuals or a couple with the goal of enhancing a family’s overall functioning can be a valued approach. For example, meeting with the adults in a family for the purpose of building parenting skills can have a significant impact on improving the overall wellness of a family system. While my practice is strictly online, we can discuss how a family therapy approach can benefit all within the family. Family dynamics can be challenging to navigate even during the best of times, and family therapy can help each member of the family unit find new ways to relate, connect, and communicate with each other. Giving each family member the chance to feel heard and valued while also navigating external stressors like work and school can be a struggle, so I work collaboratively with clients to identify and explore patterns of interaction that they want to strengthen or change, while highlighting each member’s contributions, and celebrating the family’s successes. Each family has its own unique personality that impacts the functioning of its members. When working with the family, I help improve their ability communicate openly to challenging issues and work through ups and downs in their relationships.

My background in relational therapy allows me to understand individuals through the relationships they cohabit. Families come in various forms and sizes, and at times, navigating through these relational dynamics and understanding differing perspectives may be difficult. Throughout our time together, we will work to make each member’s voice heard, find ways of communication that feel helpful, and establish and restore connection. It is not uncommon in families for patterns to be set and sometimes these patterns are not healthy or helpful for family relationships, or individual mental health. We often learn to tolerate our family members’ behaviour and have difficulty speaking up or expressing how their behaviour impacts us. In my sessions with families, I encourage open, honest communication and ensure that each individual feels validated and gets equal time to be heard. Often difficult conversations can be more successful when there is a neutral person facilitating and promoting respectful, non-confrontational interaction.
