Understanding the dynamic that exists between family members in the family system is a very important first step for helping familiesa achieve their therapeutic goals. Elim counsellors have done advanced studies in Family Systems Theory and are able to identify dynamics between family members and guide family members to conclusions that are necessary if unwanted dynamics are to be changed. By using this approach, family members are able to move away from unhealthy patterns of blaming each other and become more focus on changing unwanted dynamics.

Family therapy tends to be short-term treatment, usually several months in length, with a focus on resolving specific problems such as eating disorders, difficulties with school, or adjustments to bereavement, or geographical relocation. In family therapy sessions, all members of the family and the therapist are present at most sessions. The therapists seek to analyze the process of family interaction and communication as a whole; they do not take sides with specific members. They may make occasional comments or remarks intended to help family members become more conscious of patterns or structures that had been previously taken for granted.

Family Therapy initiates an awareness of and a respect for the very different reality and experience held by each family members. it facilitates awareness of the uniqueness of each family member's individual identity, rather than promoting individual family members as a reflection of the other. Understanding unfolds such that family members are capable of developing a map of reality that reflects the awareness of, and respect for, the important needs of each family member . In my practice I work with families to problem solve around the barriers that are preventing them from connecting in a meaningful way. While utilizing an attachment theory based approach families will learn to redefine their relationships and learn to communicate with each other in a way that allows stronger bonds.

I believe that families are resilient, thus, in family therapy, I provide support to the family to help every member of the family to work together so as to resolve conflicts and improve family interactions. A family is a team and if one person on the team is affected by a mental health condition, a substance use disorder, a physical health condition, crisis or any other unfavorable situation, all the family members are affected. Therefore, in family therapy I support the family to rebuild their strength, to find a solution to what brought them to therapy and to resolve the issues in the best possible manner.

Family therapy uses a specialized approach to bring in one, two or more family members and work together and in a non-blaming way to consider what changes might make the hard things easier. As a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist I have specialized skills and experience to use family therapy approaches geared to each unique family context, that help people use their strengths to support growth and create effective changes in their lives. Counselling may involve directed conversations and specific and creative interventions to explore dynamics and practice more effective relationship and communication skills. Family therapy is generally brief, results-oriented, and cost-effective.

Family relationships can be some of the strongest connections we experience in our lifetime; however, when these relationships undergo strain, we can be left feeling disconnected and distressed. Family Counselling can allow some or all family members to begin exploring their challenges together, and ultimately strengthen the family bond by allowing each member to feel heard and understood in a safe, unbiased environment.

Family Therapy (FT) is close to my heart because it was one of the first therapies I became practiced in. Family Therapy often involves attachment issues for children. My approach is to educate family members on various issues and the impacts of their behaviours on other members of the family. I require a strong commitment from all members of the family to be willing to change behaviours for the benefit of the entire family to improve family functioning over the long term.

Doing family therapy allows each member's voice to be heard and counted. Everyone participating is permitted to share their own personal feelings unique perspective, express what is needed or necessary to be said, even to the extent of challenging status quo in the family. Everyone's input and voice are considered to be equals no matter the age or status held in the family. The outcome of family therapy can be rewarding enough for blind spots to be highlighted and greater insights recognized like never before. More than anything it is participating as an important contributor to a much healthier family dynamic.

At Home or Private Discreet Intensives

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Usually a client's challenges are directly related to their position in their family constellation. Particularly in dysfunctional familes certain members are relegated to restrictive roles and behaviours. For example, the one with a temper, the hider, the denier, the scape-goat, etc. It is sometimes imperative to see the whole family in one or more sessions to truly identify the malfunction and to treat this particular family member. When the therapist is imbedded right in the family observing the "family dance" then the chances are vastly improved that the therapist can identify the family perturbance and empower the family to implement more successful dynamics.
