Bev loves working with couples at any stage of relating. She is experienced with pre-marital counselling, has worked with blended families and has seen techniques bring about peaceful, growing relationships rather than conflictive, alienating feuds. She has worked with couples who are trying to recover after an affair. She has worked with couples stuggling with mid-life issues. Bev guides couples in hearing each other using Active Listening and coaches her clients through the delicate process. Bev equips clients with a problem-solving format if that is what they need. In couples therapy we would use art therapy in some of the sessions as a way of creating a mutual safe place between partners. I would also explore language and establish identifiable issues that we could set concrete goals around. I am a big follower of the Gottman Insitute, which emphasizes the importance of establishing the 'dream within the position' of each partner. I believe that this allows us to explore hurts that each partner is bringing into the relationship, and the dreams that they similarly have for the relationship. In couples therapy we would set small concrete goals each session, and always do 'check-ins' as a way of maintaining and learning emotional safety.

The practices of narrative therapy often challenge simple explanations of objective truth. Our lives are seen as multi-storied, rich with details and diverse experiences. In narrative therapy, we seek the neglected aspects of our stories that have been given less power and visibility. In my work with couples, externalization allows for the excavation of affirmative stories that are hidden beneath problems such as blame, conflict, and disconnection.

A couple can truly love each other, but also find themselves continually hurt by the other person's behaviour, silence, or choices. Communication, vulnerability, seeking to feel respected and cherished, are all vital for a relationship to thrive. Specifically, some elements of communication and roles being placed on each other may need to be recognized and re-evaluated.

Every couple is unique and it is important for them to realize that they often bring different personality styles to the relationship. Couples' learn how they are different, how to see these differences as a strength, and how these differences are communicated. Couple's learn how to assess their emotional intimacy, choose where they wish to start and are in charge of the change process.
