During my more than 30 years of practice I have continually improved the range and depth of my learning and expertise in both traditional and nontraditional therapies. I create a safe, caring, stimulating environment for you, using whatever approaches are best suited to your needs, guided by holistic principles. In helping you I draw on a wide range of rich, creative therapeutic approaches, including behavioral and cognitive therapies, hypnosis, EMDR, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Enhancement, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Exposure therapy, Energy Therapies, as well as methods derived from other healing practices and my own varied experiences.
I specialize in Trauma (both PTSD and Complex); Anxiety problems, including generalized anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder; Sleep problems; Drug and/or Alcohol problems; Suicidality; and Grief and Loss (including relatives and friends who had someone close to them kill, or attempt to kill, themselves).
My sessions are typically more than an hour and can go up to two hours or more (same price!) as years of experience and training have lead me to conclude that good therapy takes whatever time is needed; there is no research supporting the conventional use of an hour or less for therapy. Having been a client in therapy myself I know the frustration of feeling like you've just gotten "warmed up" and suddenly the session is abruptly ended. You and I determine how much time we will use based on many factors, particularly the nature of the problem we are working on and the therapeutic techniques being used.
You will always find that my approach to therapy is very interactive and never boring. While I am empathic and nonjudgmental, ensuring that you always feel heard and understood, my candidness and willingness to do whatever I can to help you often result in unique and challenging experiences which go well beyond traditional talk therapies. As many of my clients have observed, I am not your usual therapist. I offer free telephone consultations during which you will gain a sense of who I am and how I work.
While knowledgeable in psychopharmacology (which I also teach at Drexel University in Philadelphia) I work collaboratively with your doctor(s) in arriving at the most effective, least invasive medications. However, I consider psychiatric medications as a last resort, and am a strong supporter of alternative medical approaches, the use of herbs and supplements, and complementary healing systems when appropriate.
In addition to being a therapist, I am also an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor in Drexel's Behavioral Health Counseling program where I teach a number of counseling courses to students training to be counselors.
