Anger, when left unchecked, can make a person feel out of control. Anger can result in relationship and work problems and medical issues. Anger is also, most often, a secondary emotion. Working in therapy can help to identify the primary emotion and root causes of anger, as well as help to devise practical strategies to manage anger and control the physical symptoms that contribute to behaviors that accompany anger.

I always tell clients that there is nothing wrong with getting angry, it is how you express it that is most important. Expressing anger can be difficult, especially if we have been taught that our feelings don't matter, that we don't have a voice or that what we are angry about is "not that serious". In therapy sessions, I will assist my clients with learning the origin of their anger, coping skills to manage their anger and ways to express anger safely and in a healthy way.

Anger as an experience and a behavior can have several causes which need to be assessed before deciding on which approach would work best. While generally caused by frustration, the reactions an individual exhibits can be the result of deep-seated emotional problems including trauma, or a learned reaction which seems out of the individual's control to deal with. Neurophysiological problems can sometimes exhibit as a loss of temper. Evaluation by a counselor can be very helpful when anger is a problem to determine if anger management or another form of help would be the best approach. Mental strategies and even relaxation exercises may be a part of anger management approaches.
