I love it when I have the opportunity to work with multiple family members because I get a chance to see rather than hearing about interaction styles and that gives me a chance to help a family try something different. Many times we get stuck in how we interact with a particular family member - perhaps you feel that a parent still treats you like a child well into your adult years. Or perhaps you feel like an emotional teenager every time you get into a power struggle with your child. I help families figure out how to "grow up" in their communication and build cooperation so that family time can be enjoyable instead of stressful.

Did you know that not everyone who claims to practice family therapy was actually trained in family therapy? It's true. Only licensed marriage and family therapists are specifically trained to deal with the complex issues that can arise in families. Not surprising - you know your own family and how complicated it can be! It takes a therapist with experience and training to know how to balance the needs and wants of each family member, all while making sure everyone is heard and understood. Add to that the difficult tasks of helping the family as a whole achieve its goals for better communication and closer relationships, and it's clear it takes a professional to make lasting changes for you.

The family is the primary and most important group that most people will ever identify with. It is very important to understand the relationships that each family member has to the others that contribute to the functioning of the whole family system. It is also important to understand how families evolve over the life span. When there are problems, life transitions, or other issues, the healthy balance of the family system can be jeopardized. Family therapy can restore this balance. It can help the family understand which repetitive behavior patterns are resulting in instability, while teaching new behavior patterns that provide stability, health, and happiness to each family member.

Relationships are precious and can be, like many other precious things, delicate. The very love that is at the heart of relationship can lead to jealousy, disappointment, or feelings of betrayal. Family therapy is a powerful tool that can be used to put things back on track. I work as a consultant to the family. I look for ways to strengthen communication and mutual trust. I also find it very helpful to teach famlies specific techniques that can be substituted for destructive behaviors and habits that may be present.

Although you may be feeling hopeless right now, with guided support and a willingness to change, itis possible to re-build your family dynamics and have it be even better than it was before.

Life can present you with difficult situations which are hard to process and move past. These challenges are not on your timeline and affect everything. Having worked in many healthcare settings, I am familiar navigating life-changing events and grief. I understand the territory of encountering loss, coping with trauma, the complexity of the medical system and living with illness. These issues can have ripple effects on your relationships, sense of self and perceptions of the world. I know how complex things can get, and I will support you during this process.
