I am a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and am completing a Ph.D. in Marital and Family Therapy. I focus on building stronger relationship attachments by helping you communicate emotions. I have advanced training in experiential approaches to family therapy (Gestalt therapy and emotionally-focused therapy)--this just means I help facilitate greater emotional contact between family members.

Family therapy sessions aim to strengthen all members of the family so they can work out problems together. Often, if one family member is identified as having an illness, the cause can be traced back to a larger family problem. If the person with the illness is treated while the rest of the family does not change, then the symptoms will persist. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, my education, training, and experience has had an emphasis on the family system. When working with families, a focus on the structure of the family, roles, rules, boundaries, and communication are areas included in our work together. Families of origin, extended families, and blended families can participate in family therapy and I find it beneficial when we can include all involved so everyone has a voice.

Family therapy techniques teach and coach members of a family unit to address family conflicts by improving the communication and interaction of family members. There are numerous family therapy techniques, but four main models dominate the spectrum. The main therapy family techniques: structural, Bowenian, strategic and systematic. All provide an environment to increase communication and an empathic understanding of the emotions of family members. Our initial assessments determines the technique that the therapist feels best to increase positive interactions within the family unit. During sessions we provide an environment that is safe and non-judgmental, allowing free expressions.

Each person in a family has a voice and each person in a family has an impact. I am careful to make certain that the family looks at all the members and how they all interact as a family unit. It is important that each member is respected. We look at how the family is not in a state of health due to choices that the family is making.
