No one WANTS to be angry. Anger is a secondary emotion - meaning, it's a symptom of another emotion that you are dealing with through anger. Often when we feel an emotion that is too overwhelming for us to manage, we react with anger, which lets us avoid that original emotion. Managing your anger will mean that we explore what that original emotion is, help you to identify what caused it, and how you can tolerate it without utilizing anger. Sessions will also allow you to express your feelings in a safe, supportive environment, without judgment, perhaps for the first time.

Anger management is about anger understanding first. Why are we angry? I will help clients' seeking assistance with anger by creating a safe space to explore the anger, to process it, and understand it. We can't seek to manage it if we don't understand what is really happening for us. Through pattern exploration of experiences with anger, we can process and navigate the emotion and work together to manage it.

There are 3 phases in working with Anger 1.Prevention- Attempts to forestall the very onset of anger. 2. Intervention- Aims to reduce the intensity or the duration of anger that has already ignited. 3. Postvention- Aims to discharge any residual anger. Emotions are regulated by re-experiencing, releasing, or converting them into a safe form. We will not only focus on your cognitions and behaviors as entry points but also focus on the modification of affect (your emotions). Anger is an emotion. To have no room in therapy for the feeling component of this emotion is to deny its very essence, your existence. Gestalt perspective- Expression of anger can be very productive. Let out!

Anger issues can be very destructive to relationships, careers and your health. Even though anger may have initially been used as way to help feel more powerful in the moment, it often leaves you feeling powerLESS in that it often feels like the anger is controlling you rather than you controlling it. It also becomes ineffective as a "problem solving" strategy in the long run. Anger usually hurts more than it helps. I will help you understand you anger - what causes it and why you fall into it so often - and provide the tools and support you need to overcome this issue. Anger may be trauma-based and I take a trauma-informed approach to therapy in general.

Anger is something that gets the best of all of us at one point or another. And sometimes it feels so heavy that we learn to react on it instantaneously, which may hurt ourselves or others around us. My goals are to help you to manage your anger reaction by learning how to channel it through positive and productive endeavors, as well as to explore the history of your feelings of anger to learn where they began. Our work will not only change your anger reactions, but will also aid in decreasing the anger feeling itself.

Anger is the most common coping mechanism that is often misunderstood. Suppressing or avoiding anxiety inevitably leads to being overwhelmed and sometimes emotionally exploding. Instead of suppressing anger, a person should learn how to embrace it, be curious about it, feel it, understand it, and eventually channel it in a healthy and constructive manner. Anger comes from a sense of being misunderstood, ignored or left unsupported and the therapy should acknowledge and explore these areas. Therapy is invaluable in addressing anger issues, offering a safe and nonjudgmental space to delve into the root causes and triggers of anger. Through exploration and self-awareness, therapy helps individuals identify underlying emotions such as hurt, fear, or frustration that may manifest as anger. Therapists employ various techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness practices, to develop healthy coping mechanisms and communication skills. By learning to recognize and regulate emotions, individuals can respond to challenging situations in a constructive manner, leading to improved relationships and overall well-being. I have spent hundreds of hours working with clients who struggle with managing anger/rage. There are specific, step-by-step techniques that can be taught, that are very effective at helping people deal with this issue. Based on reports from clients I have worked with, I have found that if clients are committed to their process, most people make significant improvement within 6-12 sessions. Drawing from polyvagal theory, AEDP and mindfulness techniques, clients can learn healthy ways to manage and experience their anger.

A response to life's events falls upon a continuum from neutral to highly-reactive. At times anger, Gandhi called it "Righteous Indignation," is necessary to respond to injustices or inappropriate behaviours. However, uncontrolled, inappropriate anger is destructive to one's self and others. Mindfulness and Metta (Loving Kindness) meditations are excellent tools to deal with anger. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) also called Tapping, along with skillful use of affirmations can help to cool the fires of anger. The benefits of anger management lead to a regulating of emotions and thus a gaining of peace of mind, positive relationships, career and family security.

Emotions serve a very important purpose, they help guide us, but all too often they get ignored, pushed aside, or asked to take a back seat. I believe it is important to have a space where our emotions can be understood, explored, and validated. Anger is often the result of emotions that have been denied, misunderstood, and shut down. My approach to emotion regulation and anger management is to help build our understanding of what these emotions are trying to tell us, learn to use this information in valuable beneficial ways, and build on resilience and coping strategies to assist in improving interpersonal relationships.

Anger is a common emotion that can come easy to us and can feel quite powerful. Our anger can often help us identify when something doesn’t sit right with us, when we feel like our needs are not being met, or like situations pose some level of injustice towards us. However, it is what we do with this anger that can make all the difference in how we cope, experience, and navigate situations. As a therapist, I will never tell you how to express your anger, but rather I will empower you to manage it in a way that fits best for you and your life. Anger is often thought of as a negative emotion, but I like to think of Anger as the part of you that loves you and wants to stand up for you when you’ve experienced something “unfair.” Anger does not always make the best decisions about when to stand up for you, so I work collaboratively with clients to identify and explore how anger shows up in their lives, and to strengthen and develop strategies to minimize the impact it has on living the life you want to live. All emotions provide information about how we are experiencing a particular relationship or event. The intensity of our emotions reflects how important this relationship or event is to us. Anger has become associated with aggression and hurtful behaviours, but in reality, anger is an emotion that motivates us to respond. Sessions focus on developing an understanding of where your anger is originating and how it can be expressed and/or resolved.

I believe that often times anger is a manifestation of unprocessed or repressed painful emotions. As such, I approach anger in a patient, respectful and inquisitive manner, allowing clients to access parts of themselves that they have disconnected from. I believe that when the emotions underlying anger can be brought to light and processed, then alternative ways of expressing those emotions can be explored. Contact me to book a free consultation.
