Mental Health in Timmins
Timmins is a rural community in Ontario famously known as the home of country music superstar Shania Twain.2 Twain has been open in recent years about the stress and depression she suffered through after her split with her long-time husband. She has also admitted that her mother suffered from severe depression as well.3 No matter what problems you're going through after ending a relationship, several agencies are available to help you during times of distress.
The Timmins Family Counseling Center is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community since 1979. The agency employs a number of psychologists and social workers to assist clients with counseling, stress management, family violence, sexual assault and partner assault. Counseling sessions are offered in both English and French for issues such as stress, depression, grief, trauma, anxiety, anger and many other challenges that accompany the end of relationships. Current Initiatives
The government of Ontario has developed a new mental health initiative called Open Minds, Healthy Minds: Ontario's Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy." The goal of this initiative is to help fellow Ontarians improve their mental health, promote inclusiveness, identify mental health problems and addictions in the early stages, and intervene in a timely manner. The focus for the first three years is on children, but there are plans to expand these services to adults as well over the course of the 10-year strategy For a full report or more information, call the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care at 1-866-532-3161.5
