The latest psychological research shows that spiritual pratices and beliefs are a very potent source for overcoming and coping with the harsh realities of life. At Elim our counsellors, in addition to being Christians, are specially trained in understanding the interplay between the spiritual and the problems that people face. For example a Christian client who is dealing with a divorce may also be dealing with the questions of why did God allow it to happen and may also be wrestling with identity issues as a divorced person in his/her faith group. These kind of issues require trained Christian therapists who understands spiritual beliefs and who are aware of the Christian culture.

I am a practicing Christian myself. So there is nothing in my approach that I would do that would be against my Christian faith. It is not my intention to change my client's religiion or lack of religion. Be comfortable with the fact that your beliefs and values will be respected like any human being. Disclosing my own personal sense of spiritual fulfillment as a Christian might strike as a great example that is so real...

We will engage with any client's religious or spiritual persuasion, including a Christian perspective. The Counsellors are trained to incorporate the individual's or couples' belief systems as they establish a treatment plan for them. Allowing for personal faith traditions within the context of pastoral counselling, can help identify otherwise hidden differences in opinion, faith and practice.

I believe that who we are is determined by what we feel in our hearts. When we grow spiritually, we can become more aware of our emotions and, further; we can better challenge the way we are thinking about the difficulties we all face in our walk. Exploring our spirituality in a safe, nurturing environment can facilitate growth and healing in all areas of our lives.

Many people who hold a belief in a higher power find themselves at some point in their life struggling with doubts about their beliefs. Through the process of verbalizing these faith-based doubts, our experience is normalized and we can gain acceptance of our position today. From this acceptance comes possibilities for opening up to new understandings. Additionally, the ability to call upon the belief of something or someone greater than ourselves can offer us immeasurable strength to proactively take care of life's numerous challenges, eventually allowing us to relinquish the outcome to this higher power.
