Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to do what you need to feel better. But while overcoming depression isn’t quick or easy, it’s far from impossible. You can’t beat it through sheer willpower, but you do have some control—even if your depression is severe and stubbornly persistent. Recovering from depression requires action. But taking action when you’re depressed is hard. In fact, just thinking about the things you should do to feel better, like going for a walk or spending time with friends, can be exhausting. Getting the support you need plays a big role in lifting the fog of depression and keeping it away.

When you are feeling feeling depressed well meaning friends may suggest that taking a walk will help you to feel better. If only it were so easy! If the advice does not work, you will remain depressed and may feel guilty that you let your friends down. Depression is complicated, it is more then just sadness or a passing mood. Therapy treats the underlying causes of depression, helps you to understanding yourself, resolve issues from childhood, and finds ways to deal with those overwhelming feelings. The therapist acts as a guide out of the darkness into clarity and hope.

I integrate cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness in treating depression, as this has been shown by research to be highly effective. Using CBT, clients benefit from understanding how their thought patterns relate to their depression, and from learning to challenge self-defeating thoughts. Sometimes, however, thoughts are stubborn, and mindfulness helps clients to "let thoughts be thoughts" while they commit themselves to a course of action that increases self-efficacy and brings fulfillment. In general, I assist clients in becoming more flexible and adaptable in their thinking, and in developing a strong set of coping skills to enhance their resiliency against depression.

Depression is a debilitating, all-encompassing experience of intense sadness, despondency and even apathy. At Laskey Counselling & Hypnotherapy we have found that hypnotherapy, coupled with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an extremely effective form of treatment for depression. First, we use hypnotherapy to provide you with the restfulness and peacefulness that you are lacking, while giving you positive suggestions for change. Once the negative thinking and perpetual hopeless feeling lifts, you and your therapist will begin the process of reframing your perceptions and ideas, essentially how you think about things, to bring you into a positive state of thinking and therefore feeling.
Gayle Way, Ph.D., R., Psych.
Do you suffer from depression which seemingly comes out of nowhere? Suppression of anger and other painful feelings often leads to depression. However, in some forms of depression the stimulus or catalyst for the depression is not obvious and may be very subtle and deeply rooted in the cell memory of the individual. Moreover, the contents of the call memory may derive from generations past. For this reason, I practice a blend of talk therapy and energy healing termed Energetic Self-Manifestation or ESM. ESM helps to resolve depression by removing the fear factor in the cell even when it is not clearly identifiable..

Some of the benefits of counselling for depression include:
Feeling better about yourself, as you learn knowledge and skills to help you to understand and manage the challenges you face;
Becoming more satisfied with life as you clear away past hurts, and improve or strengthen your relations with others;
Overcoming unhealthy patterns of feeling, thinking or behaving which have prevented you from reaching your life goals;
Shifting from reacting to situations to responding to situations in healthy ways, leading to improved confidence; and
Self awareness and personal growth.
Shawn McNabb, B.A., M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C.
When working around depression I find it is important to establish whether this is long term or situational depression. I look at the strengths one has already and how they can build on their own internal coping strategies. If medication is required (through a Dr.'s supervision) counselling strategies can also be very helpful. I also look at assessing the history of the individual. For example are they used to feeling depressed. Its important to 'meet' someone where they are at because it might feel stranger at first to not feel depressed (happy).

The emotional as well as physical pain of depression can seem unmanageable at times. Using a combination of Cognitive and Behavioural therapy, as well as a psychodynamic approach I first help individuals manage and combat the symptoms they are experiencing. I then gently push them to explore and understand the deeper correlates and events (past and present) that contribute to their ongoing sense of feeing unwell.
Annette Kasahara, BA, MEd. (Psychology), RCC
Through the process of exploring the possible causes of their feelings of depression, it is my hope that clients will discover that they do have the capability of addressing these issues. Clients will learn that they do have choices in how they view specific situations, and that they have choices in how they respond to challenges in their lives. Clients will benefit from learning communication skills that will encourage them to more effectively express needs and feelings to significant people in their lives. Moreover, it is my hope that as clients come to greater self-awareness, they will develop a kinder and more gentle acceptance of Self.

Depression manifests itself in many forms, and has been believed to have various causes. I believe in the addage that the depressed person "turns anger inward." In other words, the person who is depressed is in fact angry with him/herself.
Anger and sadness are two sides of the same coin. In my practice, I've found that those who have issues with anger actually have unresolved issues surrounding the sadness they feel toward others or towards the situation they are in.
As a trained therapist, I work with my clients to address issues around sadness. Once these issues are resolved and there is functional closure, I then help clients address their maladaptive behavior with respect to anger

Develop healthier interpersonal relationships, which can lead to alleviating and preventing depressive symptoms. Resolve past hurts and traumas. Ian provides a 30 minute consultation to briefly discuss your specific situation and how he can help.

Let go of the painful emotions that cause depression. Using rapid release techniques, this process does not have to take long. Life can be difficult and overwhelming. We try to cope by pushing away our feelings and forging ahead. This can work temporarily, but when we don't allow ourselves to release our emotion, it can build up. We may find ourselves overwhelmed and notice our happiness disappearing. I believe that underneath all of our suppressed emotions our sense of well-being is still in tact. Letting go of the build up of emotion can ease the burden and allow the inner happiness to resurface. Your happiness is waiting...

Most adults experience depression at some point in life. How we deal with it is important to our own health & wellness and to others including our partners, family, co-workers & friends. Depression, as an illness, has a beginning and a end, without or without therapy &/or medications but with guidance the process can be shortened and the physical & emotional pain managed more effectively. If medicated for depression its dose, effect & side effects should be carefully monitored. Depression as an emotion is often about being discouraged or disappointed & then perception of events or perception of the stressor(s) can be changed, or the stressor eliminated or given lower priority.
Sean Hassall, MA (Counselling Psychology) CCC, RCC

Depression has been called a sadness of the soul. It can happen in response to untoward life events, and it can stem from an inner struggle hidden beneath the surface of one's life and not at all evident to others. Either way, it can immobilize a person in just about every way imaginable: Causing them to be unable to eat, sleep, work, play, speak, or even feel the range of human emotion they would normally be capable of. Therapy helps to gradually turn the light on again by exploring those things that can weigh a person down. Talking therapy can, even combined with medication, help to unburden a person of the pain that has taken over their inner lives and prevents them from living fully.

Feeling sad, low or in a bad mood is a normal part of being human. Depression is different; it can hold us back from our lives, suck our energy, and have us thinking negatively about ourselves and the world. And, depression is treatable. My job is to create the support you need to clarify the issues and situations that trigger depression, so that you can identify and act on strategies to interrupt the dark times, to move forward, and be proactive in the future. While it's not always possible to pinpoint the cause, we can work effectively with what we do know: about thoughts, emotions and actions that can either hold us back or be allies.

Depression can be a debilitating experience in life. My approach to depression is to make it an ally instead of seeing at the enemy that causes us so much pain. Depression can bring our focus to an area in our life which is not working well or force us to pay attention when all we want to do is run away. Engaging in counselling can provide a safe place to explore depression, how it impacts your life, experiment with different approaches to alleviate the symptoms of depression and find relief from it. There is not one way to deal with depression, you have to find what works for you and counselling can provide a space to explore your unique needs.

It’s normal to feel depressed when life doesn’t go the way that you had expected, and feeling depressed does not mean that there is something wrong with you. All depression is not the same. I will work with you to explore the source of your depressed feelings, and provide gentle support and tools to bring hope and help ease the weight that feeling depressed can place on your life.

Depression is the result of following a thought system based on fear. Once I have a fear thought I can increase it over and over again until everything else is eliminated and it becomes very difficult to think of anything else. Working with the mental discipline of meditation and the idea that thoughts are our choice can make an immediate difference.

Depression can sometimes be multi-layered with a different kind of depression in each layer. It can be habitual, familial, memory specific, biological, seasonal, vicarious, inter-generational, reactional, or one of several other types. Few people like depression. Yet there is hope. Your body may be showing you something - depression can provide clues to a better life. There is information in or under that depression that can help you. Using focusing-oriented therapy, we can track where depression leads; we can discover its roots and shift your experience. Often, finding something new and helpful, we change not only your depression but also move your life forward.

Real Solutions to Real Challenges. Common Sense Techniques
Get relief from depresion. Depression is a symptom that may stem from an identifyable event, an unfulfilled intention, poor self-worth, perfectionistic traits,or as a result of a trauma such as sexual abuse, bullying, poor attachment . Over time an individuals brain chemistry can physically change. When a depresion trigger occurs it then becomes easier for that individual to go to an even darger place. Hoplessness sets in and the person becomes very discouraged. Martin helps his clients to understand these patterns, reframe beliefs, and discharge the issues that are at the core of the depresssion.
Patricia Dean, RPC
Clients who feel they are experiencing depression and are looking to resolve feelings of sadness, loss, anger or frustration that have been interfering with everday life for an extended period of time may find cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) valuable. I provide a supportive therapeutic environment which is positive and reinforcing for clients. Emphasis is placed on what a client can do right now to help change the way they are feeling. Useful, simple techniques focus on changing an individual's internal dialogue (self-talk) which will help change thinking styles from a depressed outlook to a positive hopeful outlook.
Doug Hilton, RCC
I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to heal unresolved emotional wounds from the past that have led a person to swallow his or her anger and have it turn into depression. I use Universal Healing Tao Chi Kung active meditations to teach people how to dissolve the depression and use that energy to create more virtuous feelings inside themselves. Through self-hypnosis training I show people how to train the less conscious parts of their minds to search for positive outcomes and desired results in their lives without ending up in a power struggle with their own habits of negative or self-defeating thoughts.

Depression is debilitating, isolating, and painful. There is no one cause for why we go through periods of depression. Our system has shut down and everything feels overwhelming. To work through these symptoms we have to take a holistic approach within a supportive and caring therapist. I work from a body-mind approach that addresses the emotional, physical and cognitive aspects of depression. You can recover from depression, it may take time and I am committed to being with you through this process.
Naomi Kolinsky, M.Ed, RCC
If depression is holding you back from living a happy and fulfilled life therapy can benefit you in many ways. I incorporate a holistic approach in which I help you to consider practical changes that you can make in your diet, sleep patterns, and exercise levels in order to support the brain chemistry that is required to feel good. We would also consider the underlying sources of depression in your life and address them directly. Finally, we would explore any thinking patterns that reinforce your depression, and replace them with more empowering, compassionate, and assertive thoughts that would contribute to increased self-esteem and overall sense of wellbeing.

Sadness, depression, feeling overwhemed by life, lack of meaning, purpose, and enthusiasm are some of the struggles that lead people to seek the support of a Psychologist. Rarely do we need help more than when gripped by a merciless depression, and rarely does it feel so unbearably hard to reach out. But you don’t have to live this way. Whether your depression is situational or clinical, acute or chronic, I will help you uncover negative beliefs, shift them, and reveal your own strengths, support systems, and resilience. Depression is so debilitating, robbing us of hope itself. Disengaged from life, we cannot muster the energy required to carry out our daily tasks, sometimes we cannot even get out of bed. It hurts our partners and children, and distances the rest of the world. There really is hope. There really is healing.
John Kenney, RPC,CCPCP

Devorah Peterson, M.Ed., RCC
No two people experience depression in exactly the same way and so dealing with it also needs an individual approach. Rather than viewing depression as something wrong with the person experiencing it, the client and I listen to what it might have to say to them. Though understandably, nobody likes depression, and it can be managed with tools such as Cognitive Behavioural therapy and mindfulness, etc., it can also be engaged through other approaches that allow its importance and meaning (and what it is calling for) is revealed. This can bring greater richness, wisdom, and appreciation for life.
Deborah Nelson, M. Sc. Psychology, RPC, MPCP
Life's struggles, setbacks, and disappointments bring sadness to our lives which is normal. When the sadness engulfs your day and brings feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness, it iss time that you need to seek help. Therapy, life style changes, and practical skills and techniques on how to reframe negative thinking and understanding your triggers will assist you in getting healthy. Understanding the underlying cause of the depression will help you to solve the problem. If depression is the answer, what are the components causing the outcome.
Judy Lyon, MA, SFTT, MPCP #1883
There are different types of depression resulting from various causes, for example, chemical imbalance, unresolved grief or unexpressed feelings.Yet, for the individual experiencing depression there are often similarities in terms of some of their symptoms. Depression can cause us to experience low energy, restless sleep or over sleeping, lack of motivation, loss of interest to name a few. Symptoms may range from mildly annoying to completely debilitating. Together we will explore your symptoms and possible causes from a perspective of curiousity and compassion, followed by creating and implementing an individualized treatment plan that will empower you to regain balance in your daily life.
David Aboussafy, Ph.D, C-SAE, R.Psych.

I will work collaboratively with you to understand what is contributing to your depression. We then create a treatment plan that will address each of the contributing variables in your situations that is causing your depression. Some of the things we may work on is how your thinking is contributing to your overall feelings and mood (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). We will examine what needs of yours haven't been met, and what we can do to create a better self care plan so you feel better. Clients report that counselling provides them with direction, hope, self understanding and the ability to recreate their life stories.

Lorill Drummund, M.Ed., RCC, Certified in EMDR
When people are depressed there is some reason this has happened. It is not simply that their brain has caused this. Often there are specific, challenging life events that have occured, to which the person has not yet found resolution. Medication has just "numbed" their feelings so they are no longer in a pit of despair, yet they don't feel fully alive. In Canada, it is also very common for there to be an extra layer of depression caused by seasonal affective disorder. I support you and stand by you in facing the issues, and healing each layer of the depression. The therapy I do includes EMDR, self-soothing techniques, unveiling old attachment issues, and even art and stories.
Rosemary Fromson, MPCP, RPC

Depression is real and it can range from feeling a little sad to being seriously clinically depressed.
It has been my experience as a counsellor to find that many people are sad and label themselves as "depressed" when actually they are unhappy with their lives for all kinds of reasons. The biggest benifit for many of my clients is discovering that they begin to feel alot better as they work through their feeligs about what makes them sad. And often ,as not ,this process does not take that long.
