While not a Christian counsellor, I am intricately familiar with and understands the context of the Evangelical church. I understand how Biblical passages both support and potentially challenge our ways of being and seeing the world. For those who are deconstructing and seeking to reconstruct their faith relationship, this is a safe place to explore this journey. My research (unpublished) is focused on issues such as domestic violence, sexual offending and complex mental health within Evangelical contexts.

With a desire to share with others the healing I had received in my life I founded the Mars Hill Centre, Edmonton in 1995. For 15 years we provided faith-based support, recovery groups and individual counselling for women and men dealing with issues such as childhood sexual abuse and other family of origin issues such as growing up in an alcoholic family, being raised by a parent with significant illness or childhood physical or verbal abuse or emotional neglect. When working specifically with Christian clients I will use a mix of inner healing/prayer ministry as well as psychological counselling technigues. As appropriate aspects of Christian spiritual direction may be used as well.

Some of our psychologists grew up Catholic and in a Catholic school system. They are spiritual and often times incorporate and embrace their spirituality into aspects of therapy that they employ, whether that be in the form of general spirituality or religion. Our psychologists are quite familiar with the beliefs of the Catholic Church and the different rituals, and use spirituality to empower people and help them find meaning in circumstances, if appropriate for the client.

Including faith in the counselling conversation is incredibly important if you are a Christian, as it affects every part of the believer's life.
