I am a Certified Advanced Grief Specialist. Grief is a natural process following a meaningful loss and it can influence physical, emotional, behavioral & spiritual aspects of our lives. Grief is most associated with the death of a loved one, but also occurs with the loss of a pet, job, relationship, and changes in your health. People cope with grief in a variety of ways. The intensity and duration of grieving differs between individuals. Therapy is a safe place to express & explore your feelings. I will help you learn to cope and transform your pain into healthier ways of meaning and remembrance. Through therapy you will find permission to live your life and develop connection again.

When we lose someone we love, it feels like we have lost a part of ourselves. Something within us has been torn out, leaving a hole that we easily imagine will never heal. The pain can be profound, the feelings of helplessness, or regret, or guilt overwhelming. Having a partnership where you can talk through these feelings can make a huge difference not only in how quickly and how well you are able to move through the process of grieving, but also how you ultimately are able to frame the experience and your memories of the person lost into the narrative of your own self and life as you move forward. What you carry with you afterward is just as important as surviving the hurt of the loss.

Grief and loss can lead us to dark, isolated places. We may push people away, lose interest and motivation, and reach for self- destructive coping mechanisms. It can be difficult to navigate your way out and allow healing to take place because it feels like you are "letting go", which doesn't feel right. The deep pain of grief can also be looked at as love and caring that has no place to go. Feeling lost and alone, alcohol and/or drugs can give us a place to push away our pain. However, the immediate, but short-lived numbness can keep us stuck in the process of grief and loss. You don't have to navigate this alone. Grief can be a difficulty beast to manage, a beast which can surface at any moment without warning and often comes in waves. When I’ve been grieving I’ve felt like I was in an emotional pong ball. With the aid of tools like EMDR CBT and guided visualizations I can help you to heal and leave the pain, loss, and grief in the past while holding on to the happy memories. Additionally, I can provide tools, coping skills, and other resources to help you manage this particular issue.

I provide a safe and empathetic space for clients to find a sense of peace and begin to heal from their loss. This involves exploring your relationship with your loved one, working through any unresolved emotions, and developing a sense of meaning and purpose in life incorporating your loved one and their legacy.

Grief and loss comes in many shapes and forms and can take a toll on various aspects of your life. Processing grief and loss takes time and is different for everyone but doesn’t have to be done alone. I will offer support, empathy, and a safe space for you to process your emotions openly. I am an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I have a long personal and professional history with addiction, mental illness, and trauma. I specialize in counseling addiction clients who struggle with anger management, men's issues, and childhood trauma. However, that by no means a complete list of the issues I can assist you with. No matter what else you may be struggling with, we will work together to discover thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that just aren't working for you anymore. We will then get to forming new behaviors, perspectives, and strategies that will help you live a more fulfilling life!

John has been trained in providing trauma therapy, which includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Grief and Loss can include traumatic events and/or memories which can create a negative cognition in our brain. With EMDR, we replace the negative cognition about yourself, with one that is positive and offers healing in processing grief and loss.
