We want connection- a space to be vulnerable and truly seen. But emotional intimacy is risky, and that scares us, especially with a difficult history! Instead of being vulnerable, we build up walls to protect us. Let's break down the walls and build a loving connection.

The prosperous city of Sacramento became the western end of the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad financed by the ‘Big Four’; Hopkins, Crocker, Huntington and Stanford. Leland Stanford completed the last spike. He also founded the world famous Stanford University in honour of this son who died at age fifteen. After the devastating flood in 1850, a flu and cholera epidemic crippled the city for years.1 The city land was raised in 1862 creating basements out of the first floors of buildings, which later connected by tunnels under the streets of Old Sacramento. Portions of the tunnels became a network of underground dens which can still be viewed in the “Sacramento Underground”. Today, the city is a vibrant and vital hub of California.
Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Sacramento
Divorce and failed marriages are an unfortunate reality, and today less marriages are taking place than in years past. Sacramento is also a culturally diverse area with significant black, hispanic and asian populations. According to the US Census, over 20% of households are single parent homes. It also has one of the highest per capita LGBT populations in the United States. 2 This comprises a large melting pot of culture and ideas, from all backgrounds, beliefs, and political persuasions. This diversity adds to the vibrance of the city on one hand, and results in challenges on the other as people of all beliefs and race must learn to live and get along with each other. In regards to family related education, Western Seminary has one of its four campuses in Sacramento. For adults who want to find careers in relationship focused clinical mental health, the institution offers degrees and training in family therapy, pastoral and marriage counseling.3
Family Services and Assistance Programs
While individualized clinical therapy is the most desired place for struggling relationships, for families and marriages of low income there are places to go to get help. The Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services center is a vital non profit staffed by gracious volunteers who provide help to families in need. 4 There are several community programs that are available free of charge for those who qualify.
