Diamond Counseling provides therapy services for children ages 5 and older. Even though your child may not be able to articulate their need for therapy, they have other ways of letting you know. This can include their performance at school, behavioral issues at home or school that may be problematic, fear, depression, or having difficulty sharing what they are feeling. As your therapist, I work to engage your child in an emotionally safe manner. I also involve, you, the parent(s) whenever possible. In working with young children, I create a gentle, supportive space where they can explore their feelings and experiences with the presence of a trusted caregiver. Adolescents can be a beautiful time in life, but for some it can be terrifying. Navigating through life as we try to find who we are and where we belong can be a daunting task. Support and guidance is always necessary through this time, but also learning through our experiences is vital to development as well. The pressures and expectations that adolescents carry around with them is a huge weight. Having a supportive and caring adult to walk them through this time in their life can be vital to get through this stage in life and thrive.

Young children do not have the verbal skills to explain what is bothering them and may become angry or depressed. I communicate with children at the appropriate age level using books, games, and drawing. As we play together, your child will feel safe and find a way to express feelings not easily expressed because of lack of words. I will help your child develop new coping and verbal skills that will allow expression of feelings. I will, or course, communicate with you as the parent and make suggestions to help you interact better with your child

With young children, you have to let go and play. Play is one of the ways children communicate and express their feelings. Using "Play Therapy", we enter the world of play and within the play, one finds the needs of the child, and the parents are then able to see how they may help their children in positive ways. Sometimes, it's about going for a walk with the child and seeing what comes up. It's being present, open and able to get out of your way of thinking and opening to what the child is trying to show you through their play.

I use non-directive, directive and sand play therapy when working with children. Given that younger children's brains are in a process of development and many of the more complex cognitive skills don't develop until later, play is the most effect method of learning to solve problems and process emotions or issues. As a school counselor I worked with families, teachers and children. I have trained as a synergistic play therapist, a person centered play therapist and in sand play.

Griffin works with children ages 5 and up, providing a warm, supportive space where they can express themselves through play, art, and creativity.
