I believe that nearly every approach has value. Whatever your problem is, it is unlikely that it is truly one-dimensional. I am focused on results and I believe that you can achieve them with my help.

Freud is the father of psychotherapy. However, many things have changed since his day and many of his theories are no longer practiced in therapy. One thing we believe at Gateway that is still true is that the past does often affect the present of people. The past need not define us in the present or determine our future. But it can give us awareness as to why we both do and react to some things now. We work on what we call here the back end and the front end issues to change the things in the present the client wants to change. This tends to result in more permanent behavior change.

My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in the belief that the relationship between therapist and client is the most important component to a successful therapeutic outcome. I use a blended form of psychotherapy with my clients. I have clients who started treatment for one specific issue, primarily, substance use and then during the session things from their childhood start unfolding and a connection is made on how the adverse childhood experiences play a role in their current thinking pattern, decision making and results they get because of how they look at the world. Psychotherapy helps my clients freely explore "hidden" feelings that have been buried deep down inside, and which affects them subconsciously.
