Family systems can be complex. Each person brings with them a different set of ideas, personalities, and obstacles. My goal in working with families is to help you identify barriers that are preventing your family from thriving. We will work together to understand each member of the family and how to better communicate with each other.

Our family relationships can bring us great fulfillment and happiness; sometimes family can also be a source of pain. Lack of communication and poor communication can lead to major misunderstandings between family members. Our family knows our strengths and shortcomings better than anyone else. The family may be immediately related, or may include strongly supportive, long-term relationships between people who may or may not be related by blood or marriage.

Family counseling, or family therapy, aims to address psychological, behavioral, and emotional issues that cause family problems. Family members will work with a therapist or counselor to develop and maintain a healthy family dynamic. We will develop a treatment plan specific for your family, helping everyone to feel emotionally safe, while boundaries are respected, and that everyone understands their role in the family unit.

Stress and conflict in families is common, despite the popular images of cohesive families, all living together in harmony. Whether one notices it or not, families operate as a system; each member has their roll and habitual way of interacting. My way of working with your family is to respectfully reveal and discuss these ways of interacting, while providing the tools for healthy ways of relating. Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently dysregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help.
