I would describe myself as a Christian who does counselling. The reason why I have found this description helpful is that is not based on the fact that I have grown up in church, and have been a Christian since I was 11 years old. Instead, I find this description is helpful as clients who are Christians have sought me out, as they know I will understand many church based difficulties of which they have experienced. I have seen pastor’s wives, church leadership, and their members because of this. However, there also is the understanding that those who are not Christian also are welcome to see me, that I am readily available to listen to them, too.

For many of us faith is not just important it is critical. As a professional therapist, I work with all kinds of faiths, with respect and honor. However I do identify and enjoy working within the context of Christianity. Over the last twenty-five years I have worked closely with believers, congregations, denominations and their leaders through individual, marriage and family issues but also issues of faith. Some times we struggle with our faith and it becomes more of a stumbling block. Other times it becomes our anchor. Having Christ as the center of history and ones life allows for resources that significantly bolster therapy.

As a Christian therapist, I feel it always important to work with my client’s faith and value system. Since I am counseling as a person with Christian beliefs, it is not my plan to impose my values on my clients, but to help them in their journey. Since I am a Christian, my frame of reference would be led by the spirit of God. It is my hope to guide individuals towards a stronger relationship with God and with others. It is in this relationship that I believe people will reach their goals and achieve the significance that God has always meant for us to enjoy.

Due to various challenges that I experienced as a child I often felt I had the weight of the world on my shoulder. Therefore as a teenager and most of my childhood I suffered with depression. My experiences however also revealed my life’s purpose and incited the desire to support others ex-periencing their own challenges. It was only through the support of key people in my life and the grace of God that changed my outlook on life. Your relationship with your therapist is KEY to your success and therefore it would be my privilege to support you on your journey.

When requested we have therapists who are able to integrate bible teaching and prayer into professional therapy approaches. A number of our therapists have spent time studying the integration of Christian faith and professional counselling. When Christians are going through a difficult time they are usually looking for a counsellor that shares their world view. A Christian therapy approach can help people connect with God in the midst of their pain. Working through their concerns with the integration of their faith can help them bring their whole self to the process. We also understand that sometimes people have been hurt in Christian communities and are sensitive to these dynamics.

To me, the greatest part of being a Christian is being Christ-like, meaning, looking at each and every individual as a worthwhile human being, created for a purpose. When people stop believing in themselves, I like to help them get back on track and feel good about themselves. I’ve successfully worked with disadvantaged kids, the elderly, troubled teens, ashamed individuals, and couples feeling hopeless. I see my clients through the Lord’s eyes, as precious and valuable, and I do my best to help them look at themselves that way. I strongly believe in divine forgiveness and lack of judgment, which allows people in the darkest places to forgive themselves and have hope for a better future.
