I help clients overcome addictive relationships with food. Like all addictions, the behavior is the tip of the iceberg, used to cope with underlying thoughts and emotions. Through collaborative conversations, clients gain insight into underlying concerns, gaining coping skills to more effectively navigate these issues. I draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), helping clients achieve a sense of freedom and control over their lives, leading to long-term change.

Eating disorders affect more people than is often reported in the media and men are not immune to them. Today's media sets up unrealistic expectations for what is considered "beautiful" or "handsome." Eating disorders can result if we buy into these ideals and engage in behaviours that promote this unrealistic image. There are many types of therapy that can be helpful for those experiencing eating disorders.

Eating disorders are connected to the value that society puts on appearance. In North American and European cultures, the ideal is to be thin. Being overweight is obvious to the world and viewed by society as a shameful condition. This is a demoralizing position to be in. Eating disorders are predominantly an issue for women, who naturally go through changes in their weight. But this is also an issue for men, who can hurt just as deeply if they feel unworthy of love by virtue of their appearance. My approach is to help people feel good from the inside out. I recognize that weight issues can be the source of shame, bullying and marginalization. These are often the areas we work on in therapy.

Let's explore what's going on and let me offer support to help you through this. You are not alone even though you might feel like it. Let's just take it one day at a time and share with me what's going on.

The two most common forms of eating disorders are Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. The current research shows that two of the most effective treatments for these conditions are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy. The other disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). The severity can range from mild to extreme whereby individuals experience irregular eating patterns, yo-yo dieting or at the other end can experience life threatening conditions. Eating disorders do not usually resolve on their own, they need professional intervention. It is my goal to help you overcome your difficulties with your eating disorder.
