I tend to believe that impulsive anger comes from earlier places in your life that have been suppressed. You have probably already talked these places but it has been my experience that clients often re-experience these issues through projection on the therapist. Should that occur I seek to create a different outcome for you. My approach to helping you with your anger is simply to meet with you on a weekly basis and create a safe place for you to process these places in your life. At times I may give advice but primarily I seek to give you a place to work out your feelings.

Anger is an emotion. Like all emotions, anger can be constructive in out lives, but it can also be destructive. Often times when anger is not controlled it leads to difficulties in relationships, at work, and even difficulties with the law. There are many effective techniques available to help individuals gain more control over their emotions and therefore gain more control over their anger. Even if you have been through programs that address anger in the past that have not been effective, don't hesitate to contact me to see if we can work together and try new, evidence-based techniques that can help you get better control of your anger, and therefore get better control of your life.

Anger is a natural emotion but sometimes gets managed by unhelpful and dangerous coping skills. Anger management treatment offers a specialized approach to help you effectively understand, express, and manage your anger in healthy and constructive ways. Once you have the tools, you'll have greater self-control, reduced impulsivity, and increased self-awareness, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Anger can be surprising, it can be always just under the surface, it can be incredibly important, and it can be so very damaging. It can well up, explode, simmer and often hurt those closest to us. I work to support the healthy expression of anger. Anger rises when your boundaries are violated in someway, when something tender within you is feeling threatened and wants protection. We explore what your anger is trying to bring to conscious awareness and allow that to rise from its hiding place within you so that it can receive compassion and understanding. Often, through revealing and offering that part of you attention, your relationship to it changes, dissipating much of the need for protection. Most of us have learned the lie that violence, raging is the only expression of anger. Discover your own creative and constructive, rather than destructive, ways to express anger.

Anger feels like it takes over and is a force we're powerless against. Together we'll work together to understand the roots of the anger, what causes it to build and develop strategies to both manage the day-to-day and to heal the underlying wounds. We'll work to establish healthy boundaries that keep you and others safe, while also giving you communication strategies to get your concerns heard.

When someone is angry, there's often a belief that something wrong is happening that must be corrected and the way to get someone's attention to correct it is with a loud voice and/or harsh words. Unfortunately, this rarely solves anything and creates barriers to relationships and goals. Dr. Bill Roedel helps clients understand the root causes of their anger, acquire skills to manage the anger and create a plan for approaching the issue, and gain communication and negotiation skills so an agreeable, workable solution can be found. When the anger is grounded in the past, Dr. Roedel helps clients safely express their hurt and find ways to release resentments so they can move forward.

Anger is often the result of feeling powerless and/or hurt. It can also be the result of not having well defined boundaries or the inability to effectively convey one's boundaries to others. The majority of my clients with anger issues have never experienced the healthy middle ground of assertiveness. Many experience the other two ends of the spectrum which are passivity or extreme anger. Becoming aware of one's feelings and one's boundaries and learning to assert them is the first step toward managing and understanding anger.

Anger is a necessary and commonly experienced emotion that assists and motivates us to take action. However, anger can also be very damaging in relationships when the anger is driving choices and behaviors which are not focused and appropriate to the cause of the anger. Anger also seems to work best when it is just a part of a full spectrum of experienced emotions. I help people both recognize, manage and understand their anger, and then work together to identify the sources of anger, and address those sources so that the anger is no longer needed.

I do not provide "Anger Management" therapy in the sense of someone having persistent and extreme levels of anger requiring specialized treatment. I do, however, work with anger or irritability in the context of my niches. Anger and irritability are understandable when you are a therapist suffering under the weight of systemic burnout in unsupportive agency settings, processing past trauma, and dealing with stigma and discrimination as a LGBTQIA+ or large-bodied person. It is important to not suppress that anger and find ways to process and channel it in healthy ways.
