Amy has always been inspired by the wisdom and openness that children bring to the world. Since becoming a child, youth and family counsellor she has witnessed the transformative power of family therapy again and again as parents and children give each other another chance using new skills.

She has been counselling children and families since the beginning of her career in 2007 and in that time has helped families struggling with ADHD, defiant behaviour, school refusal , attachment problems, learning difficulties, self harming behaviours, and parent-teen conflict. She is committed to providing a safe, creative atmosphere in which the walls between parents and children can come down. The benefits families have received from therapy include: parents feeling more calm and in control, less aggressive behaviour from children, better functioning at school, tools to manage anger and anxiety, improved communication between teenagers and parents, and the return of a light, peaceful atmosphere in the home.

In her own journey towards wholeness she has found nature, music, art, and journalling to be instinctive healers, and is excited to watch children and youth discover their innate wisdom using their own expressive creativity. She believes that the body’s wisdom is the greatest guide in healing from pain. She uses a combination of attachment theory, brain research, Focusing Oriented Therapy and expressive arts to help clients open the heart and mind to new ideas.

A counselling session with Amy takes place in comfortable surroundings, where children, youth and parents are guided in making sure they feel safe, grounded, and welcome to go at their own pace. The client is encouraged to listen to themselves - their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations - and learn to trust themselves. Sessions are rich in physical experience and creativity, from music, movement, painting, sculpting, and creating a safe place from available props. These methods are effective in moving people from a place of stress, post-traumatic symptoms, or general ’stuckness’ to a place of ‘fresh air.’

Amy has a Masters of Counselling in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trinity Western University. She is a Certified Canadian Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. She has additional training in self harm and suicidality, narrative therapy with families, attachment relationships and trauma. She has advanced training in Focusing Oriented Therapy is pursuing certification as a Focusing Oriented Therapist.
