I specialize in counseling addiction clients who struggle with anger management, men's issues, and childhood trauma. However, that by no means a complete list of the issues I can assist you with. No matter what else you may be struggling with, we will work together to discover thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that just aren't working for you anymore. We will then get to forming new behaviors, perspectives, and strategies that will help you live a more fulfilling life!

Addiction is a confusing, complicated, overwhelming, and powerful force that slowly or quickly takes over all aspects of one's life. Uncover maladaptive patterns of behavior, discover root causes for these patterns, heal emotional wounds, learn new ways of living and interacting in the world, rediscover who you are and what drives you. Addiction recovery is not a solo journey. You're not alone and you don't have to do it alone.

As an addictions counselor, I understand the importance of providing a non-judgmental, open, safe space where you feel comfortable to share about your use and explore how you'd like to address this behavior. Whether your goal is complete abstinence or a harm reduction strategy, I will work with you to identify the most effective ways to accomplish your goal. Many times in addiction work it is more about the feeling we are trying to achieve from the addictive behavior we are engaging in. This is why it is important to understand and implement alternative healthier strategies that achieve a similar feeling or result. When we do this; change is possible.

Addiction is a complex set of behavioral, thinking, and feeling patterns that interfere with an experience of health, happiness, and love in oneself and in relationships. Addictive behavior normally has an important function for a person. Finding and making alternative lifestyle choices can be both challenging and painful. Therapy assists in looking inwards at the situation created by addictive behavior, considering more satisfying alternatives, and exploring options that will contribute to a happier life.

Empty places within us create vacuums that long to be filled. Drugs, alcohol, sex, spending money, eating, being excessively busy are examples of the ways we attempt to fill the holes that exist within us. Going back to the origin of what created the 'hole' and repairing at that level releases us from the pull of the various forms of addictive behavior. If we don't attend to this, we may stop one addictive behavior, but we will evitably find another. These 'holes' are always healed in the context of a safe, reflective relationship. The therapeutic relationship can help repair those palces where we were left alone to process things we had no early capacity to handle.

Addictions medicate being wound up inside. Tools help people release the buried feelings that actually cause addictions! Stop treating the symptoms by trying to "white knuckle it" or give yourself pep talks. Buried feelings in old wounds are the real problem so we need tools to reach the cause, not treat the symptoms! Core wounds can keep you so wound up you can't sleep, feel anxious or crave some way to relax and "get out of your head". Tools help you understand addictions at a deeper level than just trying to say no! Addicts are actually in a great deal of pain underneath the wound up/bored level of living. Really grow out of addictions. You don't need a crutch, you need a cure

Addictions are a complicated area of work. Often the specific addiction is a symptom for much deeper discontent and shame. Along with the physical body addiction, many times the psycho-emotional issues have been present for a long time. Gaining insight and understanding to these usually very early aspects of oneself can be a useful life long tool in recovery and maintaining that recovery.

There are various types of addictions that include drugs, alcohol, spending, overeating, gambling, computer, smoking, pornography, sex, etc. Having a willingness to get the support one needs is essential in recovering from addiction—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. Working with a professional who specializes in addiction is critical. Taking a holistic approach to treatment and recovery will help release you from the prison of addiction. Staying free from addiction for the long term will require building a new, meaningful life where addiction no longer has a place and you are in control of your own life and existence.

I believe that addiction is one of the most misunderstood mental health issues in society. Addiction is not an individual problem but rather a spotlight into what is wrong within a family system. My approach is to help you understand that addiction is your attempt to gain reconnection to your authentic self and others as well as a way to find meaning within life.
