Despite the best intentions of ourselves and our family members, we are often tangled in patterns of invalidation, rejection, frustration and blame. It can feel so messy that we operate in a constant state of fear and a crippling sense of unworthiness. In 2008 I started my counselling career as a family therapist. A combination of individual and joint sessions will take place to allow the space for all voices to be respectfully heard, while helping to identify bigger ‘systems’ patterns that keep you stuck in pain and finger-pointing. I have worked families to strengthen connections and enhance communication for over 20 years. Virtual counselling can take place with family members who are in multiple locations. I do not do family therapy with the entire family, but rather only with the parents in the family. Why? Because the parents have the most amount of power to change the family dynamics. Some parents may need to learn how to work as a team, while others need to be empowered to tackle the family issues that are distressing them. Increasing parenting skills and providing multiple parenting approaches gives parents the options and tools for positively changing family dynamics. Family trauma, loss, crisis, and pain need to be understood by all in the family to better meet the needs of everyone. Negative step-family dynamics are common and once understood how they formed, change is possible.
