Located on the East Bay of San Francisco, Pleasant Hill, California was incorporated as a city in 1961, with around 33,000 residents.1 The city is concerned for all its residents. One of the programs that the city has implemented to help its lower-income residents is the HomeChoice Program, which helps lower-income individuals purchase a home. Pleasant Hill also has a list of affordable rental units, including information for units that are family-oriented or for seniors. The city is also very much involved in the community, such as providing benefit grants for non-profit groups and organizations, or even a fun scavenger hunt for kids that lasts 12 days. This is a great way for businesses in the downtown area to get the parents into the stores, but also to provide some fun for the kids, as they gather items from the scavenger hunt list.
Mental Health in Pleasant Hill
Pleasant Hill is a community in the center of Contra Costa County. The county has a population well over 1 million, making it a densely populated area. County residents are overwhelmingly young, with nearly two-thirds under the age of 45. With such a young population, several mental health issues are of particular concern. For example, over 70,000 people in the county use an illegal substance each year, including marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogens.2 As such, drug treatment programs are in high demand in the Pleasant Hill area.
The Contra Costa chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides support, education and outreach services to individuals and families who are affected by mental illness. NAMI offers peer-to-peer support to help individuals learn from others who have struggled with behavioral health issues. The agency also provides educational opportunities, so area residents can learn about effective treatments, state-mandated health programs, and common mental health issues. For more information about the services provided by NAMI Contra Costa, call 925- 942-0767.3
Current Initiatives
In order to address the growing need for child mental health services, the Human Services Agency of San Francisco has begun the Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Initiative. The initiative seeks to give low-income families access to over 150 healthcare programs, including mental health services. Therapeutic playgroups and parent education groups are available. Observation and assessment services are also an option. Clinicians are available to provide in-home services as well. All programs are specifically designed to address the needs of children under the age of five.4
