Walnut Creek is located approximately 16 miles east of Oakland, California. Since it lies in the valley, the temperature is fairly cool, with moist and cool winters, and warm to hot, dry summers. There are quite a few different parks in and around Walnut Creek, with the city owning around 1,800 acres of undeveloped hillsides, ridgelines and park sites.1 There are many family-oriented activities to do in and around Walnut Creek, such as visiting the California Symphony, participating in the Civic Arts programs, or see some plays performed at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Getting around town is no problem, just jump on BART, which travels through most areas in the Bay Area. If walking along trails is a family favorite, consider the Iron Horse Trail, which runs right through Walnut Creek or the Contra Costa Canal Trail, which also runs through Walnut Creek.

Mental Health in Walnut Creek

The homeless and poor residents of Walnut Creek can seek assistance at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Nearly 150,000 meals are provided to needy residents each month. In addition to feeding the hungry, the food bank seeks to reduce food waste and raise awareness about hunger and nutritional issues that many citizens face. By getting nutritious meals, individuals are able to focus on other life areas such as relationships, housing and employment.2

The City of Walnut Creek seeks to reduce the incidence of intimidation, harassment and bullying in the city's schools by offering a summer camp program that focuses on improving relationships between children. Participants in the program learn valuable conflict resolution strategies, as well as ways they can avoid bullying situations. Through interactive activities such as skits, children learn to communicate better and improve their self-esteem. Camp graduates leave the program with a variety of tools to help diffuse uncomfortable situations. For more information about this program, call 925- 943-5800.3

Current Education

Individuals who wish to serve their community as a counselor can get a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or school counseling from San Francisco University. Both programs are offered by the Counseling Psychology Department and prepare students to provide competent and compassionate care to people of all ages. Both degree programs combine in-class learning with practical experiences in the field. Graduates are eligible for licensure in California. For more information, call 415-422-6868.4
