I do short-term solutions-oriented therapy to help you think differently about yourself and your world and then develop skills to better deal with your issues from the past or to better deal with current areas of difficulty. We start by assessing problem areas, and then deciding together how best to approach them and what result we would like at the end of therapy. Therapy itself involves talking in sessions, and feedback from me,but also many other skill-building activities such as reading, practicing new behaviors between sessions, and doing things to reduce life stress.

Dr. Sobo integrates traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy with progressive psychotherapeutic interventions such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Mindfulness training. These techniques help to treat the effects of patients presenting problems as well as traumas. Patients learn to facilitate emotional and cognitive processing, as well as cultivate self-awareness of inner body sensations. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy has been reported to reduce symptoms of PTSD, nightmares, panic attacks, and hyperarousal, while providing tools to help increase feelings of safety and a sense of control over one’s self.

How long does therapy take? This is a question I am often asked and yet is so difficult to answer. So much depends on what you expect and want from their therapist. Some people want a to address a specific problem they are facing and others want and ongoing therapeutic relationship. Personally, I much prefer working with patients who are looking towards the longer term commitment. I love getting to know my patients and becoming the holder of their stories as I try to facilitate growth and change.
