Loss, and the grief that follows a loss, is not something we simply "get over." And grief isn't an emotion saved only for when we lose a family member or friend - we can feel grief and loss after a pet dies, after a move away from family/friends, after the loss of a job...the list goes on and on! I work with clients as they begin to share the pain that accompanies a loss and then accompany on the journey of healing as they walk through the waves of grief that follow a loss.

Grief is a powerful and unique process. There are numerous examples of how grief and loss can show up in your life, but often grief is in response to a deep and profound loss that you have experienced. This can show up as losing your loved one; your spouse, your close friend, your colleague, your beloved pet, or it can be the loss of your job, your marriage, your relationship, your home, or some other aspect of your identity. Love, patience, and compassion are vital to your grief process. Being able to navigate your grief process on your own can be overwhelming and that is when it is helpful to have someone to work with to support you and help you heal by being a witness to your process.

In our western society, many well-meaning people simply do not know how to support someone who is grieving. From loosing a job, to divorce, death or catastrophe, there is no right way to grieve, but there are certainly better and more helpful ways of approaching your grief. The goals is never to get over it, because no one ever really does. Whatever your experience, I believe you can get through it and grow through it - and you don't have to do it alone!

Connecting to our experiences of grief & loss means connecting to ourselves again. As people, a common experience we share is that of loss. Sometimes a loss is a death, or the end of a relationship. Other times it may be result from a change in a persons health, possessional or security loss, or dreams and desires. The impact of a loss resonates through various parts of our life. The impact my be our sleep, nutrition, motivation, mood, relationships, job, or even passions/hobbies. It can feel overwhelming to sort out all the feelings and experiences. Counseling gives you a space to safely unload your experiences, receive validation, and create steps to reconnect to yourself and your life.

Greif and loss are inevitable in life and there isn't a standard timetable or way in which we may find resolution. In some cases the goal isn't to resolve our grieving as much as learn to live with loss. I take an individual approach to living with grief and loss. We can use mindfulness techniques to be able to experience our pain in order to allow our emotions to be expressed.

The death of a loved one is possibly the single most difficult experience that anyone can face. Seeking out counseling is a good way to handle the grief and loss that come after experiencing loss. With children, play therapy can be a great additional tool to use to help them process their grief indirectly.
